Have a horse that's hard to catch? See the secrets!

Anyone have a horse that plays "tag" with you? He doesn't come with oats, either. I have a horse like that. He plays "tag" with me every morning. I get SO annoyed. But when I'm firm, confident and calm, he is easy. But that's not everything. Look deep into my ten secrets to catching a horse easily so that he stops playing "tag".

1. First, he has to be alone. In a round pen, big pen, or an arena. He can see other horses, but not in the same pen.

2. Then clear out the area of herding animals (border colies, Healers, etc).

3. Wait until he is calm. If he trusts you, this will take 30 seconds.

4.Grab his halter and lead.

5. Hiding the halter and lead behind your back, stick a horse treat in your pocket

6. Walk up to him. If he walks, start walking parellel to him.

7. When he stops, stop.

8. Walk up to him, talking softly. Keep the horse treat in your pocket.

9, Grab his mane, tug slightly (to let him know you have got him), and put the lead rope around his neck. Let him know he is caught with it by tugging a little.

10. Put the halter on. Lead him a step or two, and feed him the treat. Pet him.

There you go, I hope this works. If it doesn't, email me.

I tend to shy away from the treats untill after all the work is done. Every now and then (like when the guy in the white pickup with the needles is on his way over) one or two of my herd will decide they don't want caught. (how do they know?) Anyway this is out in the pasture and the vet's on the way, no time for roundpen fun. I leave the rope draped over my neck and tuck the halter in my belt behind me. I pace the horse about 20 feet beside him until I can get in front, all the time pretending the horse isn't there, I just happen to be going in the same direction he is. Once I'm ahead of him, I start pacing slowly back and forth in front of him, still pretending he isn't there until I'm close ennough to extend my hand out, palm down, fingers curled for him to smell. Then I walk away and continue the pacing again. I'll do this about three times, then I'll give him a gentle scratch on the forhead. Do that about three times then rub instead of scratch. At this point I continue the rub and work my way to his offside. About now is when I can get the leadrope around his neck and get the halter on. Always remember, the more rushed you make it, the longer it will take.

About Heartlandhorse

I am a girl. Barrel racing on horseback is basically the only thing I excel at. I am dyslexic, so I only excel at horses(everything to do with them), messy rooms, and training dogs. I love to help horses and their owners so that everyone is happy. Don't you?
