The other day I had one of the best sessions with my mare
that I have ever had! She is relatively newly broken in, and she is a really
head-strong horse for me to ride. She'll buck if you want her to go the
opposite way she wants to go; will continue another 10 metres after the 'stop'
cue before she actually stops; will plough in whichever direction she wants to
go in when she has her mind set on something...you get the gist!
Anyway, I started of by doing Join-up with her. The first
time I stopped hunting her around the ring and turned my back on her, she came
in to me, but wouldn't follow. I decided on another round; the process began
again. The second time I turned my back on her; she came in and followed me. (Her
following me was really only a few steps in my direction to begin with, because
she was really puffed when she stopped). Then I put the halter on her and with
the lead reign attached to the halter, I got on her, bareback. I walked her
quietly around the ring, getting her to stop and turn at different intervals.
It was amazing; she was so good! I can't get over how receptive she was to my
commands. I really felt like we were working together, rather than working
against (like I feel a lot of the time when she is under saddle). Anyway, I
just wanted to share this. Those of you out there who have done similar to this
will know the amazing feeling it brings!
