    ApHC changes drug rules

According to what I saw at one of the Appaloosa forums I go to, the ApHC BOD's had decided to allow a lot more drugs in showing horses. Apparently, they made the decision without making it known that they were planning on doing it or seeking input from members. According to the info given at the site, drugs used for HyPP will be allowed as well as lasix and a higher allowable level of bute/banamine.

Has anyone seen anything on this?

There's not anything on the ApHC website about it, and I haven't received any mailings on it.

www.spotsforsale.com then click on Spotted News in the menu and there is a report by Sandra Matthews that addresses the issue.

edit added : www.formulaonefarms.com/drugpage.htm is the person I first heard about it from at one of the App forums I go to. I was glad (and very surprised) to see that my representative was 1 of 3 that voted against the new rule.

ApHC ( www.appaloosablogspot.com ) has put a thread up at it's Blog Spot asking for member input on their drug legalization. All please go and leave your thoughts!

Done..hopefully other breed lovers( and I mean all breeds) will post an opinion on the ApHC blog(and here). Other clubs will look at this issue. It is just about Appys.

FWIW - the allowable limits of bute and banamine weren't changed. However, several additional NSAIDs were added to the permitted list...but they also have use limits in place.

Although there are a couple of differences, it looks like the ApHC has adopted the bulk of the AQHA rule, which is a revised version of the USEF rule.

Also, FWIW - for horses showing, the use of acetazolamide (an HYPP med) is restricted to those horses confirmed and recorded as being N/H or H/H - keep in mind, most HYPP horses are probably undergoing acet therapy at home, as part of managing the HYPP. This rule would allow those horses already being treated to also be able to compete.

These comments aren't meant to support or oppose any of the rules, just adding some information.

    Beth
