Breeds of the World is one.

There's another, but I can't remember it right now.

    Re: Horse Breeds

Here is a link to some sites that Equisearch has put together to give you a start on your research :-) web page

I first want to commend you for wanting to do research before starting to seriously look for a horse. I second want to let you know that horses are individuals, and while animals of specific breeds may have a tendancy towards certain behaviors, any given horse can have ANY temprament. So, if a breed is described as "hot" (like an Arabian) don't assume that ALL Arabians are hot. Likewise, not all Quarter Horses are calm.

If you are seriously COMMITTED (and I put that in bold because it takes A TREMENDOUS amount of commitment to have and care for a horse), I urge you to take riding lessons with a trainer before you even begin to look for horses. Even experienced riders take lessons, because being a good horseman is a life-long process. Not only will lessons give you some skills that you will need to have a successful horse experience, it will also give you an awarness of the costs associated with horse ownership. In addition, your best bet in finding a safe, appropriate horse is to get someone to help you pick out the one that best suits your needs and abilities. A LOT of people unfortunately have horses that are not appropriate for them, either training or temprament wise, and it really takes away from much of the joys of owning a horse.

Good luck, and let us know how you progress!!

That was nicely put, the bad thing is where I live I dont know of any trainers to get lessons from in the area. I really need to read up on everything about horses because although I am very interested in them I dont know much about them, or the terminolgy used when talking about horses..so if you know a good website that would help me learn more all over about horses it would be much appreciated.

Andalusians are beautiful horses, though most of them cost at least $10,000, if not more.

    Re: Horse Breeds

To find an instructor, go to your local feed, farm supply and tack stores. They usually have bulletin boards where lesson barns will post flyers, or you will be able to find someone to point you in the right direction. Check your phone book. Your state is known for ranching and horses, so you shouldn't have any problems getting help locally.

I'm getting the impression that you know nothing about horses, in that case, the last thing you need to be doing is looking for a horse. The first thing to do is find a lesson barn and getting started in taking lessons and learning how to care for, handle and ride horses. Horses can be dangerous, and if you have no idea what you are doing, even more so. So get in a good lesson program and start thinking about buying a horse in a couple of years.

    Good luck.
