    Sore on Hock

I need help guys. My horse has had a non infected sore on his hock for almost a month now. He got it from laying down in the stall at night...the barn I'm at beds and there are rubber mats but they do not bed super heavy and I can't afford more bedding with what I'm paying for board. I started applying tricare and it scabbed over so I stoped, but now it's back and open again. It is slightly chilly here but I was going to start hosing it with warm water at night. Any other suggestions?

    Re: Sore on Hock

If you can afford them, I have seen "hock socks" that are supposed to be for that purpose.  It's common for horses to get sores on the joints from laying down and getting up.  Two of mine had just small spots on their hocks that finally, after everything I tried to do, turned into callus.  Let me see if I can find what I'm talking about in "socks"

Here are two that I found.

I'll second poverty's suggestion to think about protective wear for his hocks of some kind. I believe there are different types and brands of "hock boots" and the like that protect different areas, etc. I'd shop around until you find one that will relieve/redistribute the pressure in the area he's getting the sores. Some horses just seem to get them, and if he's already on mats he may be one of them.

Thanks guys!! I'm going to talk to my mom and really consider that because I think it would be good for Mickey.

My guys are out 24/7 and the mare seems to get them more than the gelding. She's more thin skinned. They've healed over and now I'm using MTG to try to get hair to grow. So far no luck! Sad Maybe I'll try the hock boots from State Line.

    Re: Sore on Hock

If you do get hock boots/socks - if there is an active sore put goop (techie term) on it and wrap with soft cotton before putting the boot on.  It may rub otherwise.  Once it's healed then go with the boot alone.
