    Weirdness ...

Some guy stopped on the road that runs in front of our farm over the holdays.  He proceeds to try to coax(sp?) Choctaw to come to him at the gate.  When she wouldn't come to him, he opens the gate and enters our pasture and tries to catch her.  She still wouldn't come to him, but the neighbors (my adopted children) were riding down the rode and saw him doing all this.  They stopped to ask what he was doing.  He said nothing and scurried back to his vehicle and left.

That same day, some guy (maybe the same one) called while I was gone and my daughter answered the phone.  He didn't give his name or anything.  He wanted her to sell Choctaw to him.  He asked a bunch of questions about Choctaw.  He kept insisting that Choctaw was a pinto mare and she would be a perfect match to a horse he had.  Vic explained that Choctaw was a grade mare, but the guy kept insisting the she was a pinto.  Vic told him no that Choctaw wasn't for sale (her horse).  He persisted wanting her to sell Choctaw and got kinda of huffy and ugly when Vic kept refusing to sell her horse to him.  He fially slammed the phone down when she insisted that she wasn't selling her horse.

    This is Choctaw...

Does this look like a pinto to you?  And why would a perfect stranger stop and try to catch someone else's horse?  I swear people just keep getting weirder and weirder!

I'm just glad  Choctaw didn't come up to him. Even if she did, though, it doesn't sound like he would be smart enough to be able to catch a horse.

I would definately get a lock for all your pasture gates and lock them whenever you leave your house and for the night.

what a creep ! Some people just get your goat don't they ? I had an experience when I used to board my horse in Aberdeen Sk. Some guy walked on the yard and insisted they call me about selling star to him. I drove out there because I had a bad feeling about him being so insistant and he waited ( it takes an hour for me to get there) he said everything is for sale even though I said she wasn't, demanded I name a price , etc etc, finally I said if I was offered half a million I wouldn't sell her, in a way I guess he finally understood and he got all huffy and said she was only worth x amount blah blah

long and short I ended up calling the police to report it as suspicious and I kept the horse in for a couple of weeks . Out of sight out of mind.

I would report the incident to the police for sure and make sure they have this guys phone # or any info he gave you or that the neighbors got. That way if you have any other problems it is documented.

Good advice.  I had not thought about it.  I guess I'd had better get the number off our caller id and call the police.  I have always been a little uneasy about the gate on the road.  One of our neighbors keeps some of his calves in with Choctaw and it is awkward to have him driving through our yard all the time though.  I think that I will speak to him about a lock though.

Really, like I would sell a horse to someone that she won't approach - much less a perfect stranger!  Choctaw may be a cow sometimes, but she has good instincts.

Like I would actually sell a horse to someone who doesn't know the difference between a black grade horse and a pinto mare, but acts like they know it all.  Like with children, some people don't need animals.  Scares me.

I would have been like, you need to give me $200 billion.

I bet he would have payed counterfeit money, anyway.

Put a lock on your gate right away and keep an eye on your pastures. I remember an insident that happened years ago, I lived a few miles away from a college rodeo arena, they had some creepy guy start showing up there for a few days, just watching everybody ride and looking at the horses. The people there got used to him since he didn't seem to be hurting anything, then a week later six horses were stolen right from their pens. Luckily they had brands and/or tattoos, police were able to track them down to a feedlot in another town before they were sold off. It could have been really bad! (I think there might still be a news article about this online, I'll try to track it down.) He proberly wouldn't offer money for her if he was planning on putting her on a feedlot, but people are capable of anything to get what they want!

To each their own... but to me my horse!
