I might have a BIG problem

my mare has suddenly gotten REALLY fat and her teats are no longer hugging each other but more relaxed and pointing downish. She HAS NOT been exposed to a stud in 3 years but there was a really flighty gelding that was on top of her. I am getting the vet out to do shots in 2 weeks.... I will ask him to check her, is there any hope that she isn't pregnant ? The other mare that was in with this gelding was getting super fat too. Believe me this is NOT what I want:( The gelding was sold in August because he was impossible to deal with(not my horse)

Goodness, T, I hope your mare isn't preggers!  (Which one is it, Star or Destiny?) It could be a false pregnancy, I've heard of that happening with mares.  You might check her dock and backend to see if they are getting mushy - if not, the issue is likely a false pregnancy.  You should be OK unless the gelding in question was only recently cut before his, hrmm, association with your mare, or if he was a cryptochid and still had a testes left.  Since your vet will be out soon have him check her over just to be safe.  Fingers crossed that your mare is NOT with foal!Smile

Not to sound worrying...but the person I get my hay from just showed me pics of her baby donkey...born in January!  It turns out the stallion has two undescended testicles which she thought made him sterile, and the mare went into heat last December...and surprise!  Baby is here....

I hate to say it, but that does not sound promising.  Poor Star! Sad If her exposure to the "gelding" was about 11 months ago, then it could be possible you will be having a bouncing baby horse pretty soon. Is Monday a holiday in Canada, too?  Here in the states it's President's Day...

I did . He said he will come have a look at her in 2 weeks, and not to stress about it. It is what it is. SIGH.

Oh my Tricia, I had no idea you had all this going on. I hope that she's just getting a big old hay belly from being fed well and not getting exercise. But she sure looks pretty plump. Can you get up some pictures of her utters? I hope the vet can get you a clear answer soon. Are you all prepared for a foal, just in case?

Oh no!  I hope she's not pregnant!!  I'm not trying to get your hopes up or anything, but something similar happened to one of my mares, Jessie, a long time ago.  She didn't get super fat, but her teats got really big, relaxed, and dropped down like they would if she was pregnant.  We called our vet and she thought that it might just be because Jessie had had several foals before we got her and she was coming into heat.  Nothing more happened than that.  Not saying that's what's going on with your mare, but just a thought.  Good luck!  Hopefully you won't have a baby soon!

Good news ! Not likely pregnant, bad news, there is definately something going on . Lots of testing and stuff going on... aaaarrrrrggghhh. Possibly false pregnancy or an infection. Remind me of this moment if I ever think about boarding in with other horses again Sad
