    Jumping Critique

These are video stills from one of the shows I went to a couple of summers ago with Rizzie.  I just got the video from my trainer.  What do you all think of our jumping form?  I know they're blurry, but does anyone know how to get a read-only DVD onto YouTube so I can post the actual video? lol.

You're right, they're a little fuzzy and I'm no help whatsoever with the YouTube issue.Stick out tongue  But, from what I can see, you're jumping ahead of the motion.  I like the pictures in series!  You can see how the initial jumping ahead affects the rest of the jump.  In the first picture, your crotch is way ahead of the pommel and there is not enough angle in your knee and hip.  You're almost standing in your stirrups, rather than bending at the hips and waiting.  In the third picture, you're already almost back in the saddle, while your horse is at the apex of the jump.  The fourth picture has you sitting even further down and your horse is just coming over the apex.  The final effect is on the landing.  You don't have anywhere else to go with your body to absorb the landing shock, so you have to lean back slightly, straighten your leg and you're back to standing in your stirrup - your heel is way up.  Your butt is at the back of the saddle.  Landings are always not the best picture op, so I know it's a awkward moment.

I think you might give more in your release, but it's hard to tell.  Rizzie has very nice form - nice, tidy and square in front.  I like the flat picture.  You guys look very together and forward.  Very nice turnout.

I hope you get the video up - I'd like to see it!

Remmer is right, you are jumping a bit ahead of the motion. I'd slide your leg forward a bit more, which should slide you back a bit to get with his motion.

Other than that, lovely! Maybe just a tad bit more of a release-but only by like an inch or two. The horse has a great form! And other than jumping a bit ahead, so do you!

I'd love to see more and a video! ^^

Hmmm...I think that you need to push your bottom back a little, and if I were you, I would put my stirrups up a hole. Your legs are a bit pushed back, and that is mainly because of the stirrup length. Your head is up, which is a problem I have all the time! Great Job Overall!

    Re: Jumping Critique

you have a nice stirrup length for flat riding but you should shorten your stirrups a hole or two when you begin jumping. you are jumping ahead by getting a little more out of the saddle then you need to be which means you are reaching for your stirrups so shortening them will most likley solve your problem. you and your horse look very nicley turned out. if your at a show then brading your horses mane would make everything look more neat. but good work! Thanks, everyone, for the input!  I can't wait to start working with Rizzie again so I can work on our jumping a bit more.  I'm giong to try to keep up with it over the summer with one of the other lesson horses until Rizzie's done taking care of her baby so I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

I'll try not to repeat everything that other people said. Overall, your position is pretty solid. I would agree that you should consider raising your stirrups a hole or two when you're jumping. Also, make sure on your landing that you lower yourself gently and subtly so that you're not coming down too hard on that landing stride. You should ride your landing stride as much as your takeoff, because it it just as important to not interfere. One more thing, is when you're in your two-point, drop all of your weight back into your heels even more to close your leg and give a prettier picture. But you're doing good right now, keep up the good work.
