New Dressage Game - Create a Story

Why don't we start a fiction story? Each poster can add the next paragraph (or more) of the story and the next person adds to the story and so on. You can come back and add more than once, too. I'll start.

    Here's the beginning: Ahem ....

Esmerelda was not as new at this as everyone thought. They didn't know she had spent plenty of time in the dressage arena as a youngster. But life had intervened, and she hadn't ridden for almost 15 years. A friend had gotten her started again, and she only hoped that her previous dressage skills would come back to her, like riding a bike. How she had agreed to ride at this schooling show after only riding again for a few months, she wasn't sure. Now, as she made a circle at A and began to enter the arena, she could see the judge at the opposite end and felt her stomach lurch. Her horse, Goliath, was a trusty soul, but he had a few quirks ...

(Hey, this looks like fun! Now, back to the story) :

Her horse, Goliath, was a trusty soul, but he had a few quirks – like bucking. So did she – like getting bucked off. She tried not to think of that as her eyes moved over the crowds, and spotted her trainer and friends. She briefly thought of the time spent training together and her trainer’s words floated in her head: “keep him straight, balanced and halt”. So did other, irrelevant thoughts such as why one of the judges looked like her first grade teacher and whether or not she had locked up the house when she left at 5:00 a.m. this morning. “come on” she thought to herself. Focus. They had done this at home many times, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

They had done this so many times at home, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Both she and Goliath knew the test forwards and backwards, backwards and forwards. Halt, Salute!WOOOOO! They did it, a beautifully square halt by Goliath and a decorous and respectful salute by Esmeralda, two tasks down only about fifty left to go. Oh jeez! They proceed on in a collected trot when suddenly the loud speaker crackles menacingly! Phew! It's okay just a little crackle, it's not like anyone's actually going to ANNOUNCE while she's trying to concentrate, right? Left and right. Um, left OR right. Oh dear, oh no. It's less than 10 meters to "C" and Esmeralda can't remember if she's supposed to track left...or track right.

laissez faire, laissez aller, laissez passer, et laissez les bon temps roulez toute la nuit!

Left? or right? left? or right? Es closes her eyes and decides to let Goliath choose. He goes left, of course. much easier. No bells. Can it be they are OK? Then it comes to her. 20 meter circle at E, diagonal, reapeat on opposite rein. But just when the pattern reappeared in her mind, Goliath saw something out of the corner of his eye. He immediately did a sort of renver with too much bend and suddenly they were on the quarterline. Ach! thought Es as steered him toward the short side. They turned left a few feet before A. Just when she was preparing to circle at B, the unthinkable happened ....
