    Just starting out

My dad has a large mini, almost pony size, you can see the pic of him on my pics, he's the white one. When we bought him, we were told that he knew how to drive, and ride. Well, my dad has had him for almost a year now and he wants to buy a cart and drive him. Can someone tell me how to get started, measuring for a cart and what are all the accessories needed? Also, where can we get a cart from for a decent price. It won't be used for shows or anything so we don't really care what it looks like, well it needs to be decent. I'll have to go to the auction and see if they have one.Stick out tongue I hate going there. I always come back with  tooo much stuff. lol!!!!Wink

I taught Chloe to drive, and the first thing you need to do is ground drive every were.

First, since mini is just supposedly broke to drive, but you havne't seen it done with said pony... not that I'm doubting it's true, but it would be best to ground drive first, make sure he has that down. Then progress to cart as if you were training the horse... assuming he really is broke (I don't doubt that he is) this will be done quickly, but it's best to make sure ;)

Get a Frontier cart. Do a google search. But you can try to find one used. Check out Craigslist, contact a member of the local miniature and local driving clubs in your area to see if they know of any....

You'll need a harness, get one with breeching! For a good quality inexpesive harness, I recomend Zimmermans. You'll find their number at the page I"m about to send you a link to..:

Stay safe and have fun! Driving is a blast ;)

Thank you both for yur help.

CheyAut- Yeah, I bought this mini at an auction, and I kinda doubt it myself if he can do this or not. He is very skiddish. You are definetely rigtht about ground driving him first. I was wondering what kinda bit should I use for him? Thanks for the link you sent. I will definetely go on it and  check it out. Thanks for your help.

Well, hard to say what bit... I would try either a mullen mouth or the elusive french link (harder to find for minis). Many people also use a liverpool. Driving bits typically are half cheek.

Mini bits are often crappy quality and will pinch. Of course I LOOOVE mylers, but with their expense... here's a good alternative, the first six:

I have one Myler, the rest are that brand (Kelly I think it is, I get them from her, she is part of my drill team!). I like the mullen mouth and the low port (I hardly think of it as a port).
