Sprague, so sorry you have to go through this.  What a heart wrenching decision to make.  Take care!  I know you will do what is right for Vanny.

For your sake Sprag, I'm sending many jingles that Vanny will be able to put some weight on his leg today.  As others have already said, we know you are strong enough to make the decision needed and all of us on ES are here for you, whatever happens.

He carries me away from all my fears
And when the world threatens to fall asunder
His mane is there to wipe away my tears.

I am soooo sorry. I know you love him alot. I support your decision. Him walking like that is no kind of a life for a horse. Lets hope he puts weight on it and things will be ok though. Good luck. We are thinking of you both.

I know it is a hard thing to see them struggle...but I've seen worse come back.  Just be sure in your mind you have no doubt about what you do, so you can have peace with your decision.  You will know in your heart of hearts when he is ready....

     Peace to you...

sprague, I can only hope that by the time you got home, Vanny was feeling miraculously better. But if he wasn't, I know you'll take care of him. Sometimes the hardest decision is the right one. Good thoughts for you and Vanny coming your way.....

My prayers are with you now.  I was faced with a similar situation in December, had my mare for 23 years, from birth until her final hour.  Bless you for making such a heartfelt decision.  Be there with him as he has been for you for all those shared years.  And give yourself time to adjust to his loss, you may need it.  I did.

    Re: news on Vanny

ETA:  I"m posting this for Sprague

Everyone is so great and supportive. It means the world to me. I promised that horse that I would always do what was best for him and not me.

I decided that the best for Vanny and not me, was that he should be put down. We were all in agreeance (is that a real word?)  that it was more than likely neurological damage from some sort of trauma.

The other vet came out and told me that she has seen 3 other cases like this, 2 his age, 1 a young filly. The 2 his age were later put down after a while and the filly recuperated but she was not as bad as Vanny and she was much younger. So I’d rather let him go when he was not in pain than to just wait and put him at risk of other injuries and pain. And she said that if it were her horse, she’d put him down without hesitation. She was pretty certain that since there was no improvement with him holding weight in the 4 days, that he’d never be able to. And I just don’t have the funds for further testing. So he will be buried in the back pasture in his favorite spot. I have the mane and tail for use later. It will be so hard going to the barn and not seeing him anymore.
