    Mare with Hip Problem

The last week in March my 6 year old Thoroughbred mare started going rather unsteadily under saddle. She could not walk a straight line and kept drifting to the right. Tracking left at the trot she could not turn off the rail. She would be very resistive and then trip when she tried to turn. She was also having issues negotiating corners in the arena. At one point she fell so deep into the corner that she nearly ran into the fence and at the next corner she broke from a trot, walked through the corner and then picked up the trot again. Tracking right is not as bad. She can turn off the rail and negotiate corners but her hind end scrambles to keep up. Also when she makes a circle tracking right she can't stay round off my inside leg and the circle turns into more of a hexagon. She is not showing signs of lameness in any of her legs. My trainer advised me to have her looked at by a chiropractor that she trusts and has used for years. Three weeks ago, he came out and made adjustments to her right hip, sacroiliac region, lower back and neck. He recommended hand walking for the first few days and then we could return to light riding (walking and a little trotting). I followed his instructions, however, when I rode her for the first time after her adjustment she was still having the same issues. A week later the chiropractor came out again and made another adjustment to her hip. This time he told me to ride her the very next day. The next day she was actually able to circle left at the trot for the first time in a month. It was choppy and more of a square than a circle but she was at least able to turn. I was relieved until after I asked her to do it again and she could not. She hasn't been able to turn left again since that one time and it has been almost a week. I am going to contact the chiro again and give him an update. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I'm feeling kind of frustrated because my horse has showed little to no improvement and she's had this problem for over a month now.

I'm all for chiropractors, but this horse needs to be seen by a vet!

Can she negotiate a turn without you on her?

This could be neurological (symptoms seem to fit those of some neurologic problems) and if it is no amount of adjusting will help; if you don't seek medical attention she could continue to deteriorate.  It could also be skeletal or soft-tissue, but something that a chiro cannot address or may even be making worse.

I have been trying to get the vet out to see her and so far he has cancelled twice on me at the last minute (very frustrating).

She can negotiate turns without me on her, just not very well. I think the extra weight of a rider makes it worse.

QH, I agree, the vet needs to take a look. There's more than just a minor adjustment needed here. It shouldn't only last for one good turn before she's back to where she started. EPM is a a consideration, but a chiro won't be able to diagnose it. Yup, job for the vet to really get to the bottom of things. If one won't show up, it's time to haul the horse in or call another vet that WILL show up. Good Luck!

I agree that you should find another vet if he doesn't show up. If you don't mind me asking where are you located?

    Re: Mare with Hip Problem

I'm in Southern CA and my horse is boarded in Lakeview Terrace not far from where I live. I am waiting for my trainer to get back in town so that I can update her on my mare's condition and consult with her on finding another vet in the area. The one we have used for years is great but he sometimes flakes on appointments. My trainer is currently up north at a hospital with one of her own horses who suddenly became paralyzed on the right side of his face. They've been running tests on him all week and today he's having an MRI. :(

I'm sooooo sorry to hear about your trainers horse. I wish them the best of luck. My aunt used to live in CA but she moved back to Jersy 5 years ago. I'll ask her who her vet was and if they are any good. If he's good I'll let you know. This way you have options.

    Re: Mare with Hip Problem

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the help. With my trainer gone I've been helping run things at the ranch so I haven't had a whole lot of time to devote to my own mare's problems this week. She's only been getting turn outs the past few days, however, she has been running around bucking and frolicking like her old self. Maybe she is starting to feel better. It's hard to say.

    Re: Mare with Hip Problem

Well, I talked to my aunt and she said the vet she had retired. She doesn't remember his name cause it's been a while since she lived there. She did mention to try calling Lis A Grim. She does general, acupuncture and dentistry. (760)634-2144. I hope she can help you. You can also try Greenman Equine. I don't have her phone number but you may be able to get it by google. Good Luck.
