    Purina feed recall

Anyone have feed on the recall list? It appears to be from one particular plant on the East coast. The problem is aflatoxins in one of the ingredients. Some of the products recalled are:

all Country Acres sweet and pellet

    Horseman's Edge

    Equine Adult Senior

    Purina Goat Chow

    also some pig food

You can do an internet search to get the specific lot numbers on the recalled bags. Purina notified the distributors but is keeping this pretty quiet so far!

The recall -- oh, I'm sorry -- "voluntary retrieval"  (insert sarcasm, I have NOT been impressed with the way Purina has handled this) -- was originally just from one plant in NC, but has been expanded to PA and NY.  About 15 states or so received feed from those plants.  It has all been kept pretty hush hush, so you really have to hunt down information.  Lot numbers of recalled feed can be found just by googling purina feed retrieval.

Just the motivation I needed to switch Solo back to his SafeChoice (which I liked better anyway, it just is not included in my board feed and is harder to find around here)!

I know my country acres 10% pellet was recalled. I had to throw mine out and buy all new. I think I saw the list on thehorse.com.

Here's a link from May 5, 2008 that talks about the recall and lists quite a few states that are affected:

Should I be worried that my feed dealer hasn't even heard of the recall?

I am so disappointed in myself. I didn't keep the bags so I don't know if my horse got the tainted feed.

My horses haven't shown any signs of being sick, so I am guessing that i didn't get the tainted feed. I buy my feed every other week so it could still be possible that I did get it.

Call the feed store and ask if they had any of the bad lot. Make sure you keep the list of numbers to check your new bags. You want to be sure that you don't get the tainted stuff next time. Good luck!

I did, they didn't even hear about the recall. That's why I asked if I should be worried? They didn't even seem like they cared. The man had said that when the gets the letter then he'll worry about it.

Id find a new feed store if possible. If any of my feed stores had said that to me, I never would have gone back. Part of there duty as a feed store is to be aware of such things AND if a customer hears about something like this, a phone call wouldnt kill them...

    Re: Purina feed recall

You aree absolutely right. Luckily I had talked to my friend yesterday who worked there, she wasn't there when I asked, and she had said that she called them to find out and they told her that the reason they weren't notified was because it didn't affect them. She gets her feed there too and was curious if it was tainted. I haven't gone back to them since, even though my friend works there. I told her theat the man was rude about it and she said she would talk to the owner. I now get my fee at Ricks saddlery, even though it takes an hour to get there vs. the 5 min to the other feed store. Thanks.

    Re: Purina feed recall

I have noticed that in all the postings that Purina has been bashed quite a bit. But I am not sure everyone is understanding just what happened in the recall. First of all because of Purina's efficient way of informing people about the issue NOT one horse got sick. Not one!!! I think that is what truly matters. Besides that the only reason there was a recall was because of Purina's strict grain testing procedures. They have such intense testing that goes on in their facility that, that is how they were able to catch that there was a problem. Other feed companies don't test their grains and as such, so many things go to the wayside and are never discovered until a horse or horses start getting sick. So I am quite pleased with the testing process that they implement, and that they didn't waste any time getting the feed off the shelves. It wasn't kept "hush, hush" as someone stated. They had a problem and they corrected it as quickly as possible to keep the animals safe. Besides that haven't you heard about how Purina so willingly turns away tractor trailer loads of grains if it doesn't meet their standards. Where do you suppose that turned away grain is going? To all the other grain companies out there who don't based their feed completely on quality but rather percentages and just passing the minimum accepted levels of the states

    Re: Purina feed recall

Luckily I live in California so this doesn't effect me. I have had a pretty good experience with Purina. I feed my horse Purina Senior and Complete Advanage as well as Amplify and he is doing great on it. Overall I think Purina is a great company.
