    Stall Matts

I have a large horse that tends to drag is feet when walking around his stall. I just moved back to the barn that I am at and its hard to keep the stall well bedded enough for his needs. I was wondering if any one has used the therapeutic matts such as the comfort stall system?

Are you concerned about his feet or about the stall floor or something else?

No he is really big and drags his feet when he walks around his stall. The floor of the barn that I am in is concrete and he has really bad hock sores and such. I just have heard that the therapetic matts are a better by in the long run and I wanted to know someones's opinion on them

I'm confused.  Does the stall already have mats and you are looking to possibly upgrade to better ones?

If he's standing on concrete you definitely need to invest in good quality mats.  Concrete floors do have some benefits, but I wouldn't let a horse stand on them without a good mat between the floor and shavings!

I don't know much about brands, but I imagine any major brand would be fine.  The important part is getting them fit into the stall nice and snug so they don't move around or get shavings under them.

Poor guy! I hate my bed too!

I too am looking at stall mats and am in confusion about them. I figure its all going to boil down to the fact that shipping is going to be a financial pain and I'll have to get them locally anyway.  I'm atleast trying to be smart about it.

Another thought would be to ask about the balance of the trim in his feet. Does he drag his toes otherwise? A long toe will drag cause its in the way and when he breaks over it to lift it off the ground, it will jam all the way up the line to hip and spine. So that may be something worth investigating, and not just for the bedtime hours.

Hopefully a discussion will get going on here and we can learn more about mats. I'm leaning towards mats that fit together like puzzle pieces and they say that the horse won't separate them...like to hear some feedback on that one.  Another biggie with me is if they can be cut for a custom fit and I'm thinking....not recycled rubber if I want them to last.

I'm wondering if mat requirements are different for different floors. Mine are dirt, yours are concrete...hmmm.

A good question would be...what design of mat would deal with dryness and drainage the best. Are all the companies addressing this the same way or what?
