    Welcome from the editor

Welcome to Dressage Today's new bulletin board where we've created a special community to discuss the world of dressage. Log in and comment on the latest DT articles. Write about your own experiences with horses and dressage. You can exchange ideas with other readers, ask questions of the editors or suggest articles you would like to see in the magazine.

The DT staff looks forward to this conversation with you.

    Re: Welcome from the editor

Thank you so much for starting this Dressage forum. I've been a DT subscriber for 3 years. I'm a disabled rider, studying Dressage at a therapy barn. I ride draft sport horses. I was thrilled to read in the August DT issue in your 'Ask The Experts' about Competitive Dressage for the Disabled Rider. This was most helpful. I have been told, that I can go further by my instructor. This is something I want to do. I hope there will be more things written in DT about Dressage for disabled riders.

I've been a subscriber to DT for a few years now. I love the new Lisa Wilcox segment (much like the one in Practical Horseman) I'm wondering why it wasn't in the August issue. Are you guys going to continue doing that segment?

I'm so glad you are enjoying the Clinic with Lisa Wilcox. We didn't include it in August because we didn't have photos from readers for her to review. More recently, photos have started coming in, and I am happy to say it looks as though we can include Clinic with Lisa in every issue. So send in your photo and tell your friends to do the same. Let's keep her busy!

    Hi Dillon,

I'm glad you enjoyed the Ask the Experts answer. We need to do more articles for disabled riders. I'd love to have some suggestions on what you and others might find useful, such as interviews with the top disabled riders and coaches, additional equipment, strategies for test riding?

    Thanks,
    Patty

    Re: Welcome from the editor

Hello- I am a new subscriber to DT. (I just sent in my money a week ago Grin) I am new to the sport and am enjoying the articles. I especially like the personal articles from individuals that have worked hard to communicate with their horses through dressage.

    Re: Welcome from the editor

I am new to Dressage Today magazine and to the sport of dressage. I started my subscription last winter and started taking riding lessons about 6 weeks ago on school horses. I don't even have my own horse right now. Thank you so much for the great articles in the magazine and I was very excited tonight to find this forum. Being new to all of this I am sure I will have MANY questions.

    Re: Welcome from the editor

You know what I would love to see in DT? Former greats.. and where they are today... I have seen Hilda Gurney (most recently at the Festival at Gladstone), but what is she doing today, other than judging? What about some of the other greats? Are they still riding, moved on to a new career? And what do they think of the path Dresage has taken (especially from those who were the foundation of this great sport/art back in the 70's).

    Re: Welcome from the editor

I would enjoy reading interviews about some of the Paralympic coaches. One such coach, Robert Louie Plagge, I would like to see an article about him. I'd like to see articles about how to get started. I'm in a therapeutic riding center studying Dressage. Although I am only a few miles from the Virginia Horse Center, it may not be possible to find trainers beyond the one I have. I may not be able to tolerate going any where else to train. I feel lucky to have, what I have by way of Dressage training. Lexington has France Yeardley who is a FEI competitor, and judge. I don't know if she has any experience training disabled riders. I may not be able to afford her, is the other problem.

The first year I got started in the Dressage program, there was the question of adaptive saddles. Would I be able to find one with support. I ended up using a punishing Western saddle. Finally, my second year I was introducted to a custom made Passier Eventing saddle. Loved it. I felt very secure in it, with the addition of the neoprene attachment. This year I am using a Smith-Worthington custom made saddle. I sit fairly deep in that saddle, and it has good leg support. I feel very balanced in it. I have had trouble in the past feeling balanced enough. I've never seen an adaptive saddle, ever. I'm thinking that you would have to have one made. I just don't know. I have used jumping saddles, just to have leg support.

There will be a NARHA Region 3 show know as TRAV at the Virginia Horse Center in October 2005. I will be competing in it taking my Dressage test, doing Dressage Freestyle, and other classes. Is this all there is for me? Are there other shows I could be doing?

Last year at TRAV, my normally laid back horse became a nervious nellie at the Horse Center. It might be interesting to read how other disabled riders handled such problems.

I have to use visual aids for my tests, due to a visual impairement. I'd like to read about strategies for test riding. I have had to use orange cones to get my 10 m circles just right. Especially in the dimly lit indoor arena, it is important to use an orange cone to know exactly when to start turning my horse. The worst event for me, is the Obstacles. I have 5-10 minutes to learn the course. I find that to be hard, having not very long to learn something. The other events, at least I have practiced those for months. I'm wondering about articles about learning something in 10 min., how to cope, especially if you have learning problems. I have been scared a few times. Generally I am very relaxed, centered rider. There are a few Austic riders who have very tense muscles. My muscles are tight, perhaps tigher than most persons. Maybe the issue of fear, can be adressed? I know one rider, one of my friends who is very tense. Sometimes I wonder how she can stay on, she is that tense.

    Re: Welcome from the editor

Thanks Dillion for all this information. We have an article coming up soon about learning how to focus better on the tasks at hand. I think this will help. I will work on your other suggestions. It's good to know what you need. I expect other riders (disabled and not) have the same issues.

I'm going to start a thread for disabled riders. Let's see if we can get some comments from them that will help, too.

Also, you should contact the Virginia Dressage Association (VADA) to find the chapter in your area. I'm sure they can provide you with a list of instructors and shows. Their web site is www.vadressage.org. Let me know how it goes.

    Re: Welcome from the editor

I am really enjoying Dressage Today. I am returning to the sport and find this magazine to be so much better than what was available in the past. I have been enjoying training my horses in dressage since the late 70's. It is so much fun reading about many of the people that I rode with back in the 70's when we were all starting out and who are now famous trainers and competitors. I have been trying out some of the various training techniques on my own horse. I also find that the beautiful photographs of riders with admirable position give me inspiration to mimic them when I am practicing. I have especially enjoyed the articles about training in Europe and the articles about the European auctions. My dream is to take a trip to Europe and spend a week or two riding schooled horses in a beautiful location. Every time your magazine comes I read it cover to cover in practically one sitting and then pass it on to a friend.

Thanks Balsam. I really appreciate your kind words. We really work hard to give readers a magazine they can use and be inspired by. Please let us know if there is a topic or trainer you'd like to hear from.

    Re: Welcome from the editor

I've been subscribing to DT for about 3 years, ever since I bought my first horse (an 11 year old TB mare) at age 44. I can't tell you how much I enjoy coming home from work and seeing that your magazine has arrived. After dinner I sit in a nice comfy chair and read it. I don't wish to "dumb down" the magazine but perhaps issues such as riding "hot horses" ( such as Throughbreds) could be addressed for those of us who do not have the means to purchase a Warmblood but are no less passionate about the sport. Also: I found a feature of Carl Hester's book, "Down To Earth Dressage" quite nice, maybe you could use it in the magazine... he talks about each individual horse (that is used to photographicly illustrate his training concepts) at length. I think it's great as it gives insite into the horses he works with and into himself as a trainer. Could this be done in DT? Keep up the great work!
