What do you think of his conformation?

He is only 18 months old so I know you cant tell a whole lot right now but do you see any major faults?  I have a lady who might show him in halter for me.  I think he would catch your eye because of the color but is his conformation good enough?

He is still baby-shaped, and I don't know didly about confirmation (which is why my new mare is in this section as well)  but he looks balanced to me!  Does he have a name yet?

Well, I can't say how he would do in a halter class as it will depend on the judge and area and I don't do halter, so someone else will have to chime in on that.

Bone structure wise -- I would say he is ok.  His neck is short in proportion to his back and his long body is not in proportion with his short chunky head and he has a very straight upright shoulder.  He is also quite straight behind through his hocks so I would worry about long term effects if he is anything more than a pleasure horse.

He is a baby, so maybe he will grow around his bones more to help things look a little more balanced -- muscle always makes a horse look better.  But his bone and angles won't change with time.

Thanks Crittergirl and Solo.  Solo what do you think about his pasterns?  There is something about them that doesn't look quite right to me.

I think what you are seeing in his pasterns is that they just don't match.  His rear pasterns are very upright, making them more prone to injury (the slope in a pastern helps it operate in its function as shock absorber).  His front pastern slope doesn't match his shoulder either, which additionally throws the picture off and to complicate it even more, the hoof doesn't match the pastern angle.  And somehow, the way his pastern has attached, it has put his feet too far out in front of his leg.  You want the back of the heel to touch a vertical plumb line dropped through the middle of the leg.  I tried to find a good picture of a correct pastern, but they are HARD to come by!

Re: What do you think of his conformation?

Thanks Solo.  I knew there was something I was seeing.  His feet are really odd.  They have been trimmed and set up weird.  His toe is not balanced, his hoof is not leveled all the way around (touches the ground in some places not in others) and his heel is to short compared to the rest of his foot.  Looks like a crappy trim job.  But there are some good feet under there, I just have to find them.  A little of the angle might go away with a few good trims but he will most likely just be a trail horse when he grows up so it should be OK.

GRRRR!  I hate when feet aren't taken care of!  Bella is still not perfect and I have had her almost a year.  It has been a long process taking her from pancake flat feet with major cracks and no solidity to where she is now.  They are still flatter than they should be and the cracks are not completly gone but I feel alot better about them.

Here is the pedigree for his Sire, Kings Olympia Joe

and his Dam, The Cash Bandit (I was wrong when I said this was his sires name Embarrassed )

You know one thing that always gets me is that if you go to all breed pedigree and look at the pictures of some of the foundation horses they have horrible conformationTongue Tied

That bugs me too -- I recently looked up a friend's horse who has HYPP and is AQHA.  OMG, whoever owned the stud Three Bars apparently bred him to everything that stood still long enough, even if it was his own offspring!

They did the same thing with Impressive.  I once saw a horse who had the same grandsire 4 times.  Guess who it was, Impressive.  I bet that horse had some major issues.

Oh yeah when they breed to their own offspring they just put a fancy name on it to make it OK.  Its not incest its Line BreedingTongue Tied

Help me with Diesels registered name

I am having to come up with three name choices to register Diesel with.  So far I have came up with The Bandit King, pulled from his Sire and Dams names and Cash Me A Check Sugar from his dam and his grandsires names.

hmmm I like The Bandit King a little more than Cash Me a Check Sugar

I personally like it when the barn name and reg name have something in common though.  What about something like Diesel Costs Cash or something.  I am really bad w/ reg names, sorry!

Re: What do you think of his conformation?

His color is absolutely eye catching, but looking at his conformation he wouldn't get anywhere in a halter class except the bottom. he is knock kneed, has quite a bit of set in his pasterns, is long eye to muzzle and short eye to jowl, which should be the other way around. While he does have a strong back it is very long and he isn't proportionate front to rear. I do like the length of hip he has though. but depeding on what types of shows you were going to show in it would be hard for him to get off the bottom. He is super cute though and seems like a friendly little guy good luck with him
