    Teaching my horse to turn

I want to know if I'm teaching my horse the correct way:

Right turns:  right rein, right leg pressing by the girth and the left leg pressed behind the girth tell him to move forward and off my left.  Is this the simplest way to teach a horse to turn or would it just be better for me to do right rein, left leg and let the right leg just hang?

    Thank you,
    Brandi

are you talking about neck reining?  direct reining?  is this a young horse you are starting or what?

. . .and ride that pony fast
like a cowboy from the past
be young and wild and free
    like Texas in 1880. . .

Yes Chief is my 3 year old Missouri Fox Trotter.  Direct reining?

    Thank you,
