    Polo

So I somehow got notified of an informal polo club in Tallahassee, and I am very strongly considering getting involved.  I need riding to just be FUN for a while!  We have a 15.1 arabian gelding with a tremendous sense of humor and he loves a good gallop and a good time, so I'm thinking in a week or two I might trailer up for a practice and see what happens.. Maybe he'll take to it!  Anyway, I know nothing at all about polo, so I was just wondering if other people know anything? Is it safe? It sure looks dicey in the videos! But this club doesn't compete or anything, they just go out to have fun. Anyway, if anyone has any polo experience, let me know!

    Marco!  (ha)

I tried PoloCrosse (mixture of polo and lacrosse) before, and it was fun, but hard!  Sounds like a great time and I think you should do it.  When I tried it I found out my balance wasn't as good as I thought it was, and I was afraid I pulled on my pony's mouth a lot as a result, but we were no worse for the wear and really enjoyed it.

     Let us know!

    Re: Polo

There use to be a Polo club literally in my backyard until they moved it, but I had gone to a few matches and fundraisers, and was an associate member. The only thing is, the people who played had at least 6 ponies that they would rotate out after each chucker, pretty pricey polo ponies that is! You can get most of the equipment through online catalogs and some clubs (such as ours) had Polo school in the Spring, where you can learn how to play (and eventually be recruited). It is very exciting to watch Polo in person, so I wish you all the best and luck!

    Re: Polo

We all learned polo last fall as part of a lesson program.  It was a lot of fun, but your arm sure gets tired after a while.  I had the same problems as TXspots - man, I had no idea my balance wasn't good!  I mean its good for riding - but for leaning over and hitting a ball while riding?  Not so much!  Big Smile

Give it a try, I bet you have a blast

    Re: Polo

Ok, so I had my first day of polo on Saturday, and the weather couldn't have been nicer! About 75 and sunny with a nice breeze. I must say it is one of the most fun things I have ever done!  I hope to keep going back at least a couple times a month.  Here are a couple pictures they took of me on Sat: http://tallypolo.com/services.html

Topper thinks I have lost my mind! He's a dressage horse mostly, so I found it very easy to maneuver him around with just my legs. He was hilarious, I was laughing so hard I nearly fell off several times. I accidentally conked him in the head with the stick a couple times (not hard, he didnt even seem to notice) and the ball rolled under and into him and he was fine. I think he really liked it! I finally got the hang of it after about an hour, and boy was my arm sore yesterday!
