    Tex Tan Saddle Critique

    TackTrader ID: 305894 www.tacktrader.com

This saddle is a 1964 Tex Tan saddle the flocking has been replaced this summer and saddle has been redone.

the numbers 1250 564-65783 is on the back skirting. all i know is 564 is may 1964 the date it was made.

Any critiques on this one? I went to look at it (sam dropped it off at our barn today so i can see it) some stitching needs replaced on the fenders, nothing major but definatly looks like an older saddle.

I have a saddle fitter coming out Tuesday at 1:30 to check out my saddle and make sure the tree isnt twisted and see if we dont have a saddle that might fit him. And she also makes what she calls an "UGLY pad" of which is handmade and is built up to where the saddle needs it to fit your horse sells for 120-150 dollars (not going to buy lol)

But i would love critiques on this one.

Also a Circle Y i know of but need to get pictures sent to me first.

All you have to do is do a search with the Tack Trader ID number in and it shows right up.

The saddle itself looks like a nice older saddle. I love the old, well built saddles myself. I forget, is this for showing or just for play? If you like it, have the fitter see if it will fit your horse and go from there.

ok you have to click on "Item ID Number" under "Search" at the bottom of the page and input the tack trader id number; I've never used TackTrader before.

Anyways, it looks good, looks extremely lightly used for a '64 model.  Tex Tan is a good brand.  Couldn't tell what their return policy is, but I would think this one is worth a try, if your horse is not hard to fit or mutton withered.  You already know to check it out to see if the tree is damaged.

You mentioned the saddle had been "redone" - what did you mean by that?

    Re: Tex Tan Saddle Critique

she had the bottom  of the saddle re padded (shoot cant think of the word for it)

I rode in it for a few minutes yesterday before realizing i wasnt ready to take riley on a trail ride like planned and took cb instead.

The saddle fits better then any of the ones i have tried on him so far. i had to use a really flexible pad, saddle fitter is coming out tomorrow afternoon to fit this one to him. and get her opinion on the saddle.,

This saddle is actually from an x-boarder whose just down the road now, so its a pretty nice return policy :]

this is what I was asking about, but I see what you mean the flocking has been replaced.  And yes that is a pretty sweet return policy - good for you!  Hope it works out, I know how frustrating saddle hunting can be and how wonderful it is when you find the right one.  let us know!

Well the saddle is a No go.

The lady came out today and looked at it she said the tree is the right size but the tree is twisted/crooked. if you look at it one side is lower then the other which would cause problems.

Sooo 25 dollars later i found out i wont pay for a broken saddle that in her opinion would have onyl been worth 350 not 600 that i was going to pay.

Also we ended up fitting my english saddle to him till i get a western saddle. she has a memory foam type padding that i bought for 10$ to add the extra padding till he gains muscle and weight.

I do have to add he looks like a little hunter pony under an english saddle :] although thats not what i was looking for.

She also had to add that his neck and back are long, along with having a very long wither. which i havnt heard before.

Aw!  Well, he doesn't haveto be just Western! Just think about a few years from now, you can have him in reining comps one day, and hunter comps the next!  (maybe....)

Sorry the saddle didn't work out very well for you!  In another post you had about a saddle I had asked if you had looked into Wintecs?  They are nice cheap saddles.  Also, Abetta is a nicer line lower cost option.

If you aren't opposed to an older used saddle, I have an 15yr(it is probably closer to 20...I got it with Rascal, and it was nice and worn in at that point...) old Simco that is still wonderful, if you could find something like that!

Cheap at twice the price, and a whole lot better than ending up with a saddle with a broken tree, which you're right would have caused all kinds of major problems.  And I hate to sound so skeptical, but I'd take any advice from a saddle fitter who is selling something (pad) with a grain of salt.  I would not have paid $600 for that saddle as old as it was (I thought it was listed at $500 and negotiatible? Maybe I'm thinking of another one) but would have paid 400 or 450 for an old Tex Tan if it fit and was rideable.  I guess now we know why it was in such good shape, the tree was broken and they were using it for decoration in the house.

Well don't give up, the right saddle is out there.  But if your pony is still gaining weight and muscle I would wait until he's much further along before investing any money in a western saddle.  Saddle fit is too important and you don't want to keep saddle hunting everytime he gains and develops, it's way too frustrating - I have the grey hair to prove it!

    Re: Tex Tan Saddle Critique

     Ok.

King synthetic saddles (in general) aren't worth poo, so don't judge a synthetic saddle based off of that brand.

Wintec is a good brand, but if you won't consider anything not leather, then that is out.

Abetta is actually a sort of half breed.  So there is leather.

Simco is a leather saddle.  And a good one at that, esp. for the price.

I didn't realize that the choice for saddle make was restricted to only leather, as there is no restriction I am aware of to require an only/all leather saddle.  Since this saddle didn't work out and you are obviously still in the market I figured I would toss that bit of info on saddles out there from lots of personal experience.

Oh well, good luck, and I agree with Txspots, since Riley is still so young and unworked, his shape will change dramatically.  Waiting might be a good idea.

    Re: Tex Tan Saddle Critique

I personally would never buy a synthetic saddle, but I know there are some folks that like them.

To me a saddle is western, and it's leather.  And not thin, cheap leather either.  And don't take this the wrong way, but it's also going to cost upwards of $800-$1,000 at least.  Unless, you can find a good used one that sombody is desperate to get rid of in this economy.

Thing is, good saddles are a real investment, and if it is really a good saddle, then they paid for it and are not going to want to let it go, let alone cheap.

Do as FH suggested in your other thread.  Save up, keep working on your pony, get him legged up, then go get what you want.  A real saddle that fits.  Take it from someone who's been there, done that - you're gonna get what you pay for.

    Re: Tex Tan Saddle Critique

Thanks everyone, as the lady stated yesterday he looks more like a 2 year old then an up and coming  year old so he has alot of developing left to do. So i agree with alot more developing i dont want to invest in a saddle that will only work for him for so long, as money is hard to come by.

I just wish i had something to work in him besides my english saddle so if he were to pull any little bucks or tricks i would have more stick/stay lol. Looks like i'll be riding him in my english saddle with a grab strap (have one now i just need to find it, i;ve never used it before) and my old western chaps for a little more stick.

Agreed i dont want another synthetic saddle. the one i have now i only use for gmykhana barrels and trail. I hate using it in the showring as i have once before. Western saddles to me mean leather. I got this one as a christmas gift when i first got into horses.

    Wish me luck.

Oh I do wish you luck and I think you're making a smart decision.  And who knows what you might come across in the meantime?  Someone you know may mention they have a saddle they're not using right now that you could borrow, lots of things, just keep your eyes and ears open.

And let us know how he's coming along!

eh, it's just one of things in the horse world that is just a matter of opinion!  I like cows Big Smile, and I personally have had lots of good experiences with synthetics, so.....

Good luck!  I hope he continues to be a great little guy, and good luck sticking to that saddle!
