What farrier tools do you own & feel are important to keep on hand at the stables?

If you remember, where did you buy them & what was the cost? I have seen a HUGE variety in prices at different places & figure quality must play a factor somewhere!

i myself do not own farrier tools although i would like to get something that could pull off a shoe in an emergency. just to be safe, since cb always threw shoes.

I have my own tools. I have the chaps, hoof stand, nippers, rasp, knife and hoof pick. I do Vanny's feet and will do the other guys if needed. Dandy has balance issues and Scout has scar tissue that I just don't seem to be able to trim to my expectations. You get what you pay for in farrier tools. You have to make sure that they stay sharp. Other wise you have to work a heck of a lot harder. And since I'm older, I prefer not to over work my back.

We have our own full set of tools, since Keven trims our horses himself. You definitely get what you pay for when buying farrier tools. Like more horse equipment, I'd suggest you buy the very best you can afford. We get most of our tools at either Tractor Supply or PFI Western Store.

We own our own tools. Everything but the anvil. But we don't shoe now anyway. We use Belota Top Sharp rasps $17. Save Edge is good too. GE nippers $200ish. Diamond anything should be avoided.

Back when I managed a farm, I inherited the old tools the farrier was going to throw away.

Mine are old and probably diamond brand. lol I hope to get some better tools soon as I intend to do more of my own trimming. I would have a rasp and possibly a knife. Truely just a rasp is probably all I need as I keep my horses barefoot trimmed and if done often as it should be they shouldn't need nippers..

I do. Ex bought me a farrier tool set, don't remember where from or how much. And my farrier gave me a rasp (which is a better one) that he no longer used (b/c he got new ones that he REALLY liked). He taught me how to fix chips ect for in between visits (he comes every 6-8 weeks, I rarely need to fix any chips ect, but just in case...)

Yep! I got a stand, hoof knife, rasp, nippers, clench setter. Everything except the chaps. For emergencies. I don't do my own trims or anything. However, I did use the stand and rasp the other day. We had pulled the shoes off my mare for the winter, but I wanted to show her at a local show. About a week after her trim (And shoe removal) one of her front feet had chips where the hoof wall was weak from prior nail holes. There were little sections of hoof that were chipping. I popped her foot up on the stand, and the rasp took care of it in a jiffy! It was the first time I had really used it, since getting it last Christmas.

I have (or should say, my mom has) a hoof pick (which everyone with horses should have anyway) rasp, and nippers. I have no idea how much they were, they're all older than me, but I definitely think they're handy to have around, even if just for emergencies. Plus, if you're strong enough (because those nippers do take some strength, especially with some horses), and have enough patience, it can save you some money on farrier bills. Also, we don't shoe, but pullers would be good to have around, too, because every one knows how annoying and dangerous a loose or thrown shoe can be.

My BO has a pair of shoe pullers for emergencies. They actually came in really handy when Yogi threw one show and had a really loose show on the other front foot. It took me awhile and lots of hard work and sweat but I got the other shoe off so he wasnt so lopsided. I'm not sure how old they are, how much they were or even where she found them, but I know many major and local tack shops carry them.

Back when we had more horses (two studs and a broodmare band), we trimmed most of our broodmares ourselves and often the first few times for the weanlings. I still have a couple pair of nippers, a few rasps, and hoof knife. I don't know where the stand or gauge went, but I definitely want another gauge. I still trim some of the pasture ornaments as needed, and I like to double-check my work.

I would absolutely not be without nippers, a rasp, and a hoof knife. You can pull a shoe with nippers, rasp off rough edges as needed, and dig out abcesses with the knife (not something I recommend without experience).

I have nips, a rasp and a knife. I've only used the nips & the knife once but have used the rasp fairly regularly. At a minimum I'd keep a rasp on hand and if funds extend to a "nice to have" I'd get the knife for an emergency repair.

I think quality is a huge factor in price but for just a use here and there prob no big deal either way. I have a rasp, nippers, and sole blade thing cant recall what its called.
