    Muscle Building Supplement

Has anyone used a muscle building supplement called "Show and Go"? I'm looking for a supplement for my gelding who needs a little help gaining some muscle mass. If anyone has heard of this product or has used it, any information would be great. What were the results of your horse? Did you notice any difference? If so, how long did it take for you to see these changes? Would you recommend this product?

I do not use that product, but I have been using SmartPak's SmartMuscle Mass with good results.  I have been using it for about a month and a half and have noticed that my horse's muscles are definitely bulkier.  They are "harder" to the touch and not as jiggly.  Since we just started back into regular work about the same time we started on this supplement, I was surprised at how fast her muscles started to tone.  It doesn't produce muscle out of thin air, but helps repair and build muscles in response to training.  So don't use a muscle builder and hope for a glorious topline without doing the proper training to get there.

Just a little tip -- a lot of the muscle-building products for horses contain gamma oryzanol, which is a substance found in rice bran oil. So, it would probably be cheaper just to feed rice bran oil. If your local feed store doesn't carry it, ask them if they will order it for you so you don't have to pay for the shipping. Rice brain oil is pretty cheap, but the shipping is what kills you! A few years ago, I was riding a horse that really needed to build muscle, and I asked my local feed store if they would start stocking rice brain oil for me -- they were more than happy to accommodate me. I saw great reults with it (although, like Nicole said, proper exercise is also key).

Frizz, just out of curiousity (Solo has the QH bulk genes, so definitely doesn't need help looking like a hulk, LOL), would feeding regular rice bran be the same as feeding the oil?  Bran pellets are pretty easy to get.

Interesting question, Solo. I'm not quite sure, but I believe that the advantage of rice bran oil is that it's a more concentrated supply of fat, etc. Also, the disadvantage of feeding straight rice bran is that it has an unbalanced calcium-to-phosphorous ratio, so feeding large amounts of it can be detrimental to the horse's health (although I believe some companies are starting to add calcium to it in order to even out the ratio). As for the amount of gamma orazynol in the oil versus the straight rice brain, I have no idea -- ??? Anyone else know?

I feed a mixture of water soaked alfalfa cubes( half scoop) and 1 cup of ground flax seed and a senior feed that has alot of beet pulp and rice bran. My horse shines and has great flexibility and is very muscular!

We also found the Gamma Orazynol to be extremely beneficial.  We have found that the oil works a little better than the Stabilized Rice Bran  but they both work.  Earlier this year we found a new product we really like called More Muscle which is essentially straight Gamma Orazynol and that works really well to put a shiny coat and muscles on them.  We buy it from Teskeys and you can get it online through their website.  It runs like $24 or something for a 30 day supply.
