Sounds like a plan to me.  Personally I think it will be October before I get to ride again.  Enjoy your ride.

Since your mom was there all is forgiven!!

Took a nice 6 mile ride this morning. Horse was great. Semi's, tractors, great big field sprayer with 30' booms that look like giant spiders coming at you. Kids, dogs, countless motorcycles. Never batted an eye. But those damn horse eating tree stumps are a witch...

    Renewed Hope For Al

A woman, Joan, who stopped to help me collect the stray horse on the highway Thursday came by Saturday morning to ask if the owners were ever located ( they were). While she was here Al walked right up to her at the fence and let her pet him. I was standing 5 feet away and Al completely ignored me but was absolutely smitten with the stranger. She's about the same height and build as the woman who trims his feet but AL was acting like he really knew who this person was and really trusted her, unlike the farrier. It was amazing.

I told her Al's story and she asked if she could go in the paddock with him. I agreed and she and Al got along famously. He even followed her around when she tried to walk away. And no treat bribes involved. She petted and rubbed on AL for about 30 minutes before I realized I should be getting this on video. All in all she stayed here for an hour with Al. I invited her to come back any time to see and work with him because it was a huge boost for his confidence. When she left Al stood at the corner of the fence and driveway, watching her drive off. About 5 PM Joan was back again with her husband, who is terrified of horses, and she stayed for another hour repeating the earlier performance.

Joan worked at a thoroughbred racing barn in New Jersey many years ago but never owned a horse. She and her DH live about 2 miles from me and have room for a horse but incomplete fencing. Joan seems to like Al as much as Al likes her. But I don't know if things will develop to possibly move Al to a home where he can be the back yard pet he needs to be for another year or so. But I think Joan is seriously considering it if the relationship continues like it has. She knows about all his baggage and understands he many never be a suitable riding horse for anyone but the bravest and most experienced horseperson.

7 AM Sunday morning and I can't find Al. He's not at the round bale with Jewel. I look out the front door and he's standing at the fence by the end of the driveway just looking out at the street. 11 AM and Joan was back with carrots and peppermints, staying another hour with Al with some good one-on-one time and even a short session of grooming at liberty. It started to get pretty hot and AL finally wandered off to stand next to Jewel in the shade by the water trough. 7 PM and Joan was back for the fourth time and another hour petting, grooming and walking with Al at liberty.

I don't go out to monitor what she and Al are doing but take a peek from the windows occasionally. I don't want to distract Al or worry him in any way when he's with Joan. We chatted for a little while before she left tonight and she told me she was up on YouTube late last night watching videos of what goes on in the Arab halter training world and now understands how Al got to be the way he is. She took that initiative on her own, too.

I think Al may have finally found HIS human. Time will tell. But I'm extremely pleased he's having a great horse/human experience completely on his own terms.

Even if she doesn't wind up wanting him for her own and just comes to visit and work with his gentling it's sure to have a big positive effect on Al. Between yesterday and today I really got to see the side of Al I knew was there all along but just couldn't bring out all the way by myself.  ~FH

FH, that is one heartwarmig story to read; and it must be doubly so for you!

Ya know, it's kind of a spiritual experience to see an instant bonding/kindred spirit sort of thing like that happen!

Hopes that it pans out however it's supposed to; and Al will be the BIG beneficiary!

What a wonderful story FH.  It's great to hear about Joan and how Al seems to have bonded with her. I hope things work out.

SmileFH - That is the bestest story ever. I had a feeling that he would warm up to just the right woman. Big Smile And to have her come out 4 times to just be near him, sounds like they have found each other for sure. Sure hope things work out that he could be placed with her and that they can live out a great life together. Yes

    Glis at her Trail Trial

Glis gets another A+ in my book for her 2nd Trail Trial event. I knew going in that we do have things to work on so I go in with a open mind to just go in and have the most fun ever. If Glis were perfect at everything, she'd be boring. LOL. If I remember correctly, we had about 14 obstacles to do along the 3-4 mile ride. We were done within 2 hours of riding. I took the camera but really I forget about taking pics when I'm out riding and talking. So I am not great at multi-tasking. Like that is new to you. LOL. We got there just before my friends I was riding in got there. Glis settled in fine.

Here are my friends getting ready.

Glis is ready for her day.

Our first obstacle was a rope gate. Glis went 3rd and was not too happy about having to wait her turn. But we got up there and got it accomplished. I put her score as a 8. Next was a mail box, set up about wither high. You go up to it, stand quiet and pull out envelope. Glis would put her nose up to it but got no where near it close enough for me to get out the envelope. She was still a bit high strung so we choose to skip it before she lost her marbles. Better to leave on a good note than to sit there and get her more upset about not being with her new buddies. Score 0. Next was back out of box. She went in but stopped crooked, so I had to back her and move her hips over to back out. I'd score her a 7 there.

Next we are suppose to calmly walk over the low, middle section of this jump. Glis went 2nd this time. She walked up to it, snorted at it, wanted to back up. I got her to go forward and she totally jumped it.LOL. Love that crazy girl. I score her a 7 for trying to immitate Solo. Then we had to walk over a muddy ditch that had a blow up something or other laying in it. Don't remember what it was. She walked fast over it, I score her a 8. Next was a car wash type of thing set up in a grove of trees. Plastic bags hanging down, tied up with baling twine. They are about wither high or a tad bit lower that you walk through. Glis walked right through them. I score her a 8 or 9.

Next was the water crossing. Walk through the water that had little rubber duckies floating in it. Go up the bank and trot off to a set cone. We had to wait there a bit before we did it cause another rider was having a hard time getting her horse across. I score Glis an 8. Then we did a walk over another middle section of a wooden jump. I score her a 7 there cause she paused there and snorted. Next was take a horse shoe and throw it into a bucket with other horse shoes so it makes a noise. I never said I was an athelete with talent. I missed the bucket, skimmed it, made a little noise, and horse shoe fell on ground. Glis never flinched, I score her a 9. Then we had to go to an unscored obstacle and grab an envelope off a step jump. It took me just a little bit to get Glis up to it, get sideways enough for me to grab it.

Then came the walk over a small open ditch. Its made out of wood around the sides. You just have to walk over it. You can kinda see that there are 3 different widths set up here. Glis did it great. I score her an 8 there. My friends horse, who did this course last year like a dream, totally balked here and refused to walk over it. Her DH on his horse did it great. His horse should place high in the standing. Then we had to walk over 2 bridges. The first bridge crosses the driveway and Glis did wonderful there. Then you had to walk over an elevated small bridge. I knew Glis would not go over it cause she wouldn't get near it in our clinic last month either. I skipped the 2nd bridge so I gave her a 5 here. Then we had to get a water balloon off a barrel and toss it into the round pen. Here I had to walk Glis around the barrel a few times so I could lean over and grab the balloon. She would not stand next to it so I could grab it. I give her a 6 here. Then our last obstacle was bowling. There were 5 or so big blow up bowling pins set up and you have to toss the ball and knock a pin down. The ball was lighter than air and it was windy. It took me numerous trys of throwing it to finally hit a pin. Glis was ever so patient with me and my atheletic skills here. Bless her heart, I score her an 8 here.

So Glis gets an A+ for her day even though we prob scored below 90. I'll be interested in how they scored her compared to me. My friend placed 2nd last year on her horse and that was after having to leave early and missed the last obstacle because her horse started to colic. Like I said, her DH did awesome on his horse. First time for both of them doing this.

Re: Glis at her Trail Trial

The instant rapport between Al and Joan must have been very heartwarming for you, Skip. The woman who massages Juno gets the same reaction from my donkeys, who are very timid and not trusting of strangers.  Sometimes a horse and a human "click". Could it be that Al needed the right WOMAN? As tactful as I'm sure you are, you're still a man. I don't know Al's story: were men the main tormentors of him?

     Good job, Glis!

Summary of Solo can be found on his blog, but in short, he has deep muscle pulls in his back and hips.  We'll rebuild with deep massage and stretchy work, gradually building back up jumping from ground poles.  He should be healed up in a couple of months.

As for me, I get another set of back injections tomorrow and am still waiting on an MRI for my knee.

    Life is fun.

Backs and hips and knees, oh my!

Well, Solaris, when it rains it pours. At least since you're moving slowly, riding or walking Solo slowly won't be frustrating. The two of you can recover together. Take it easy.
