    horse show

This (pic'd) is NOT the way to start a horse show....

I run my kid's 4H open shows.  We were having a 2 day speed show and a gal was just taking her horse into the arena to warm him up before the warm-ups.  Horse didn't get very far in and something about the barrel laying on it's side just freaked him out(from what I was told I missed the initial accident).  He started going backwards really fast and I believe she was trying to pull his nose around when he just went right over backwards on top of her.  I was upstairs working in the entry booth when another worker up there says "we've got a rider down".  I look out and this gal is just laying there with a couple people around talking to her.  I pop the window open and I can hear one of the other council members on the phone with 911.  So I holler to see if they've got an ambulance coming and yep sure do.  So I announce that we had one on the way and everyone needs to get their horses back to the trailer.

So then I go down stairs, by this time they've got a wool cooler over her and you can see her one leg laying there at a funny angle.  This is when I get there.  She is white as the back ground here staring off into space and barely breathing.  *insert internal panic here as I truly believe this woman is going to die*.  So her close friend is holding her hand talking to her and I kneel down there just watching for her to keep breathing and praying to God I don't have to use my CPR training.  Then she is laying there kinda gasping for air but her chest is moving like she's breathing.  So I quickly rub my knuckles on her chest like we were taught to do first.  She takes this BIG deep breath and then actually starts really breathing.  It was right after this that she actually starts talking and kinda whispers that the saddle horn got her in the crotch.  *This has all happened in the span of about 5 minutes if that*.  Now the first responders are pulling in.  They get out to her and I jump back out of the way, tell the one real quick what I observed.  Then hear one of them say that she's going to get a helicopter ride.  I speak up to make sure I hear correctly and ask if the helicopter is coming in.  The one guy says yes.  The guy that had been on the phone asks where they are going to land.  The one fireman standing there points out to the field and says "There".

This is the field where we park trailers for the shows.  Thankfully it was early enough there weren't many there.  So I make a beline up the stairs and announce that ALL horses need to be loaded in their trailers or put in the barn NOW!!!!!  (apparently I left out the fact there was a helicopter coming in).  I THOUGHT I said there was one coming. lol  So I go back down and our various council members are all standing around the arena just watching.  Right behind where the one guy was standing was some horses tied to the trailer.  So the guy that had called 911 and I head across the arena and start telling people that the helicopter is coming in and it's their choice but I want horses either in trailer or in the barn.

From the time the accident happened till they had her on the helicopter was just under 30 minutes.

Turns out the gal has a severely broken pelvis but as of Sunday afternoon, and this happened Saturday morning, she had NO internal injuries.  She has to have surgery to repair the pelvis but last word is she would be ok eventually.

Thankfully the rest of the weekend was NOT as eventful.

    Re: horse show

So just another boring show for ya huh JG? So glad to hear the gal should be OK. I had my CPR training earlier this year and I must say, we've never been taught about rubbing your knuckles on their chest before. Sounds like it was the right thing to do in that instance for sure. HAHA, glad to hear no one had to perform the same thing on you after suffering a near heart attack. How much alcohol did you drink when you got home????? Drinks hears to having a more boring weekend, next weekend JG.

I, on the other hand had a pretty uneventful weekend. Got out and hit the trails both days.  Was perfect riding conditions. Not one bug to be found. Grandkids came over Sat night and they had a blast raking leaves and jumping in them. LOL, Baron loved jumping in them too. Then we prob had the last bon fire of the season. Crazy fall weather is upon us. 82 today and calling for 52 on Sat. I'm looking forward to cooler temps so I can cook up a turkey in the oven without heating up the house.

Wow - not exactly a good start to the day.  I'm glad she didn't have an internal injuries, poor woman.

Holy Cr**!  JG, I was right there with you, this is the stuff of my nightmares.  Good job handling it.   That is a terrible feeling when you have a rider down and you are the one in charge.

Not much to report here.  Reining show last weekend but I couldn't ride due to the big toe injury, so I watched dd ride Cookie and win the Arabian Open division.  She also clinched the year end award for Arabian Non-Pro beating me out since I missed this show.  I was riding along mentally.   Stitches come out Thursday so I hope to be back in the saddle by Saturday.

I hope everyone else is hanging in there.  Miss you all.  I will try chat tomorrow.

Just bumping the thread. For the first time since I can remember the RR thread is NOT the one with the most replies according to the main page. Boy! Have we turned into a bunch of slackers or what? ~FH

I blame my conference.  No access to PC for four days.  After which I learned that baby's TB's are ADD if you give them four days off.  Ahhhhh!

    Re: horse show

Well I see I'm not the only slacker around here. LOL. My internet has been down off and on all week long so its been sketchy when I do get here.

I had a nice ride last night. By the time I get home I have about 15 min before the sun sets so I've only been able to ride for about a 1/2 hr and then it gets too dark for me to see good enough. So last night I had to try out one of those lights that attach to the brim of your hat. I was wondering how Glis might react to the lighting and shadows from it but she was very unconcerned with the whole thing. I find that the light when attached to the brim of my hat, glares back at me, making it a bit harder for me to see. And the light itself is great when I'm on the ground and walking. But when you get up that high on the horse, you don't really get all that much light. Which is fine but where I'm riding there are some real boggy spots and its tough to see right where they are. So I think I need to see about getting a miner's style type of light so it higher up and maybe won't glare back into my eyes and maybe will be a bit brighter.

This is my pic from last night, trying to look into the woods after we heard a deer crashing through. You can see in the upper left corner the glare from my light.

We are suppose to have some real summer like weather this weekend. Saturday I'm going to the Hunt Races and help a friend with her tail gate competion. She won the blue ribbon last year. And I'm gonna watch some amazing horses doing steeple chase and flat races. They even have a stock horse race. Plus for those that need a little something more, they do stick horse races for the kids, terrier races, weiner dog races and hold agility demonstrations. I'll check out the vendors and see if they have anything that I find I can't live without, drink plenty of wine and eat up all the delicious stuff we put out for the tail gate competion. Sunday will be my day of rest. LOL.

Spraggy, a light tip I learned from the endurance crowd who ride through the night:  attach the light to your horse's breastcollar so it lights up the ground in front of her.  They use glowsticks, but you could use a clip on light as well.

    Re: horse show

Great idea Solo. But I still think I want a light on me too so I can see what goes bump in the night. LOL.

I'm gonna get some glowsticks to put around Baron when he goes out with me. That dog goes into stealth mode when the sun sets. Hmm, wonder what Miss Glis will think of that light running around through the fields with her. Confused HAHA wonder more what the neighbors think about those glowing lights out in the fields. Re: horse show

My favorite horse + the full moon = an awesome ride!!!!  no UFO reports here though.  I don't put any kind of lights on me or the horse.  Their vision is so much better then mine an the lights impead their vision.  THAT and Journey will flip himself over trying to play with glow sticks.

I stopped and chatted with a farmer neighbor I'd met before.  They were combining beans off a field.  We chatted for prolly 30 minutes as the sun set.  I've had his permission to ride his one lane that cuts across the field to another road.  But I wanted to ask about riding the edges of the fields that were his when the crops were off.  He was all for it.  Pointed out a 5 acre woods that I could ride in and he even mentioned deer hunting in it.  Might have to check that out.  (for meat not game solo don't kick my ass lol).  Anyhoo, we were standing there talking and the old guy is on a tractor that Journey fully sniffed and taste tested while we talked.  The combine comes up to us, Journey just looked at it.  He didn't care.  The guy goes to fire the tractor up to leave and Journey about crapped his pants.  I just lmao at him.  THEN we had not one but 2 semi's pass us.  They were grain semi's and going slow (thankfully) and he could have cared less.  You should have seen his Ay-rab impression when we passed the guys house that has a draft horse.  That horse thundering across the pasture in the dark is a little un-nerving.  But he stopped at the fence and just started at us.  Of course Journey did his best Ay-rab impression and puffed himself up and was at least 3 feet taller.  Goofy critter.  Journey was honked off at me though.  He was all shades of wiggly and wanting to move out but in the dark even with the full moon I couldn't see well enough to risk it.  So instead we did a mile/mile 1/2 of long trotting.  OUCH.  Guess who can barely move this morning and is going to do it again tonight if the weather holds.

    Re: horse show

for the second night in a row.. horse + moonlight = a darn fine ride!!!! This time I even had company.  A couple local horse people have horses and like to have get together's.  They always invite me but I am usually working.  Well tonight I rode Brat out first (after work).  We rode for a couple hours.  They all went back to camp to have some supper and then head out after dark.  So I rode home, had supper, switched horses and headed back out to meet up with them.  Was another 5 mile ride tonight.  I'm not going to be able to walk for 3 days now lol.
