    Re: Al is back home...

    FloridaHorseman:
...and, for now, things are back to normal at Rancho FH.

I spoke too soon. Went out to feed the horses this morning. Al even remembered the usual spot where "his" feed bucket hangs on the fence. But Jack was nowhere to be found. I assumed he was hiding in or behind the barn but he wasn't there either. I called his name several times and finally heard a very muted whinny coming from the woods on the far side of the creek. The poor guy had buried and hopelessly tangled himself deep in the thick brush and vines of the farthest corner of the property while trying to hide from Al. I had to get a hand saw to cut him out of the mess.

Al hasn't been anywhere close to being as aggressive toward Jack as he was when Jack first came here. And before AL left for training the two geldings had reached an apparent truce at the round bale, taking turns as Jewel would let them. But until yesterday Jack had 3 months of peaceful and uncontested presence anywhere in the paddocks and this sudden reversal of fortune has apparently caused him to decay into a desperate search for solitude and perceived safety.

Poor Jack. I'll call the vet and see if I can take him in for his eye treatment stay a few days early.

Poor Jack - he was probably hoping he'd seen the last of Al.  Imagine his disappointment!

Hey if you weren't spending your money on the horses, you'd be wasting it on something else -- at least, that's what I tell myself. Hope the eye treatment goes well.

He'd be spending it on vehicles... oh wait.. How many vehicles do you have FH??? rofl!!!

Glad to hear everyone is home safe and sound!!!

Fh, Thanks for the mental pictures of silly energetic horses in warm places. Smile The picture of you cutting through brush was enjoyable as I sipped my morning coffee. though I do feel sorry for Jack having his peaceful home destroyed.      Oh man, that's sad - I feel so bad for him.  These people that say horses and other animals don't have feelings are just plain wrong.  They have feelings and emotions, every bit as strong as our own.

I hope you can find a suitable solution for these guys.

    Re: Al is back home...

Poor Jack. I sure hope you have them seperated now so Jack doesn't have to be in hiding and fear and ending up in a far worse entrapment. Sounds like Mr Al needs alot of round penning to get rid of his high and mighty attitude. LOL.

After Scout went on defense mode and tore a hole in Glis the first time I had them together, when I brought her back from the boarding barn I had her at for a few months, I made sure I had Scout on a long line when I put them back together because I knew he could have went back into jackarse mode again without proper guidence and interfearence. They still have a love/hate relationship but at least no more vet calls. LOL.

Omigosh, yay, I am so excited your vet is going to try the new eye treatment!  I actually found something useful!  As for poor Jack, well, I am glad Al is feeling confident but it is quite rude to pick on one's roommates that way!

    Al working on long lines

Al didn't have as much time on the snaffle bit as he should've so I put him on long lines to teach backing up. Just past the halfway point in the video you will see the light bulb start to go on. And yes. I work without gloves in the round pen. I have my reasons. But YOU should always wear gloves with horses on a line.

And yes. That saddle does not fit him. I only used it to run the lines through hobbled stirrups. He now has a NEW $600 saddle that does fit him.

Go, RC!!! Best of luck in Scottsdale! ~FH

(ETA- Just finished another 45 minutes in the RP with today's follow-up session. Al hit his back up cues 3 times in a row straight out of the gate with only the slightest back pressure I could manage with the heavy cotton lines! So we moved on to following the bit for turns and away-from-pressure cues; shoulders, barrel, hips and butt rope drill. He was focused, attentive, submissive and seems to genuinely enjoy learning new things. He's really showing his Arabian IQ now!)

Way to go Al! It sounds like he's "getting it". Good job.

    Re: Al is back home...

hey jg.  our little chat this afternoon prompted me to ck out the old rr thread.  so comforting to know y'all are still here.  HI EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!

jg-  deer are such a menace.  i take a deer claim almost every day here in so. il.  its crazy!

i don't think i have enough time to ever catch up on this thread, so i will just start on from here.  lol.  is rr still here?  i see you there fhm.  big hug to you!

spirit and i had a little walk today.  he hated every min of it.  i'm afraid he has become barn sour at his new digs.  and since we have been stuck in the "indoor" so much lately due to rain,  going out and down the road was NOT what he wanted to do.  so i made it not so fun for him and then he decided ok-  just going straight will be easier.  lol.

Hi there stranger!  Good to see you again.  Funny how Spirit didn't like going out for a walk.  Most horses I have worked with hate arena work and love to get out on the trail - I guess I must bore them in the arena.

    More progress with Al

Hi Wendy! Great to see you back here!

I've been working Al on the snaffle (long lines) to get him responsive and supple before I get on him. He now backs up vigorously with the slightest pressure on the bit but his turns still need some work. Yesterday we had an away-from-pressure ground lesson. It was his first in a very long time since I abandoned all attempts at ground training right after he first got here more than a year ago due to his proclivity to panic over everything. His resistance to pressing a section of pvc pipe at the shoulders, barrel, hips and chest was classic instinct. Full weight INTO me. It took close to 20 minutes to get a small step away from pressure or just a try at various points. We quit when he finally had just a few small successes.

Today: I clipped a lead on him and started where we left off with the same lesson. He was perfect at all 7 points! A bit OVER reactive at the hips but totally responsive to moving away with just slight finger pressure! Three times at each point on each side and front. Perfect. If I didn't know better I'd say he stayed up all night practicing. (It took Jewel more than a week to get it right when I got started with her almost 9 years ago.) Al's learning curve seems to have suddenly gone vertical. It's hard to believe this is the same horse I was convinced had a learning disability a year ago. If he can repeat today's performance over the next few days we'll be going for our first ride together quite soon. ~FH
