Re: How and why did you pick your horse's name?
Suriah Zarkeh, According to the Arabian names book, Suriah means mystic, and Zarkeh means blue. She has one blue eye, so that is what she ended up as. We just call her suri.
A gelding I had many years ago, and has since passed was Dust in the Wind, and we called him Dusty. That was my cb handle at the time and a favorite song. My sister named his full sister Mist in the Wind. Dusty was a sweetie. Still miss him 40 years later.

Pie is caled Pie, in short, due to the white streak down her mane, which bears a striking resemblance to a moonpie..and for you yankees..moonpies are just about the greatest creation we can get down here in the southern US. :)
Her registered name was actually the name of a diving horse, ridden by Sonora Webster (Wild Hearts Cant be Broken) in real life, The Duchess of Lightning.

I got my very first weanling colt and named him "Peyton," because we are NFL Colts fans and Peyton Manning is their star quarterback.
Then, I got another blue roan weanling, and named him "Indy." It has a double meaning--Indy for Indiannapolis Colts, and for Indigo Blue.

Re: How and why did you pick your horse's name?
Aw this is a cute post! Rascal has been Rascal his entire life, when I got him he was 12yrs old, and knew his name better than most dogs. It is incredibly fitting, as he gets into everything (despite being the most skittish horse I have ever met!!) So, he stayed Rascal! (he will be 26 this year)
Major came with his name, and it fit him in a totally opposite way. He was a very laid back, wonderful horse, who we used for Special Olympics. Not an in your face my way or the highway attitude of a major, but, he was a fantastic horse. He has been gone almost 10yrs now, and I still miss him.
Mojo, he was another rescue, and all the horses at the barn where generically dubbed 'Joe'. I wanted to keep Joe in his name to always remember what he came from and respect his gentle spirit. I decided on Mojo becuase it A) kept the Joe and B) (and this is stupid reasoning) in Austin Powers when he loses his mojo he isn't capable of doing anything and has no will to live. Even though his mojo isn't really meant in the way that I take it, it is kind of a 'life force', and I wanted 'Joe' to go from being so close to death it was scary to look at him, to getting his Mojo back! He did, running around the pasture, rearing, squealing. He was an amazing horse. October 1st is gonna be a hard day to deal with. It has only been a couple of months since I lost him. Both of the horses I have lost where rescues that were brought back to life, and both of them made it to their thirties, but gosh I wish I could have longer with both of them.
*sniff*
Ta'ceyewi: Well, I wanted a generic totally common name for him, and as EVERYBODY has a horse named Ta'ceyewi.....Actually, when he was born, and 'brown' the woman who had him decided to name him Star (he has a blob, not a star, and she thought HE was a SHE), then Hershey (his mom is named Coco)....then he starting being horrible and she dubbed him Denis the Menace, which I actually thought was cute (he was now 3 1/2 months old, thats a lot of names to go through!) When I got him I thought of keeping him Denis, but it didn't fit, and the search was on. He cam VERY close to being Wyatt (which is ironic as when I did the who is your horse's legend quiz, his came back as being Wyatt Earp), but ultimately I decided on Ta'ceyewi, (ta'c is nez perce for good and eyewi is nez perce for peace) to honor his App heritage (he is TB/App). He is fresh into his terrible two's and is neither good or peaceful, but he is SMART!
Bailey's registered name is Daily's Desire, and when the people I got her from where purchasing her, they thought the man said Bailey's Desire, so they called her Bailey. When I got her home I called her Daily, but it doesn't really fit, and that has slowly progressed into Bailey-Bails-Billy-and Billy the flying Billy goat....I am not sure why I call her a goat...
This is ridiculously long, but I wanted to give the story on my horse's names, whether they are still with me or not!
Mojo, 1980?-10/1/2010. RIP Mo-man. I know your life had many bad times in it, and I sincerely hope I made your last few years here on Earth happy and comfortable, with as much love and yummies as your huge heart desired. I love you bud, have fun running in the pastures of heaven. Until we meet again...

Re: How and why did you pick your horse's name?
these are great.
crittergirl, i thought my opener was long too. i didn't think anyone would be interested. but i was wrong. let's keep going
my first pony was BLAZE, whom i mentioned before. then we added, briefly, a chestnut shetland pony, that my mom got for $17.50. cheaper than a rocking horse she said and she couldn't resist the sad little guy. she also bought a big blue roan that day, named CHARLIE BROWN, so, we named the shetland pony, THE RED BARON!
at the time, my mom had a handsome buckskin pinto named FELIX. she didn't like that name, but, he came with it and we never came up with anything else.
if i do another post here, i'll start the names of the purebred horses that we named for registration.......but that's for another day!

I asked my brother to find me a ranch broke gelding. Peso Mi Amigo arrived at my house. He was an underfed Paint yearling. We call him Bill. Feed Bill, farrier Bill,Vet Bill. He is now 16.2 and 1400 lbs of sweet, loveable, and a bit dim.

Re: How and why did you pick your horse's name?
Duke's original barn name was "Dude" and that was 21 years ago. I hate hearing "dooohddd", so I changed his name to "Duke". It sounded almost the same to him and made the change more comfortable for him. "Duke" suits his alpha-dominant personality much much better than "dooohddd" anyway - lol lol lol Streeter's sire was WallStreeter and he had his name when I rescued him 18+ years ago. He is the child babysitter and also comes to "Teeter" when the little ones can't say their "S's" :) Rusty had his barn name when I bought him over 16 years ago; although "Copper" would have worked too. He is Sorrel with a flaxen mane & tail and he looks more like a copper penny when the sun hits him than rust - lol Joker's sire is "Joker's Yellow Man", so he was named after his sire. He was already five, knew his name and his expression was one of such surprise (with plenty of cuteness) when he came to live hear and I called him by his name, that there was no way I was going to change it.

Cowboy was his name. Not very personal. I am not sure how I came up with this, but Jesse James seemed to fit - my partner in crime!

Re: How and why did you pick your horse's name?
Fantacy my first horse came to me at 24, i kept his name. Registered name was Luvs Fantacy CB's registered name is Crying the Blues, and so they called him Cb for short Riley came to me two years ago as Sylvester, i couldnt keep that horrible name, so i looked at his registered name "R Impulsive Invite" and pulled the first letter out of each word, and came up with R I I, and so he became Riley :)
Without my horse, im just human. Without me, my horse is just an animal. But when you put us together we become an unstoppable team! Re: How and why did you pick your horse's name?
My horse came with his name: Smooth Sailing (Sailor). Even at only 4, he has a big smooth trot, so it seems to fit him. Plus, when I was in HS, the "class trip" was to Hawaii (and planning for it started early in the school year). There were 2 guys I hung out with a lot (we were all in choir together). Another girl who was friends w/ them, but for some reason hated me told them the only reason I was gong to Hawaii was to pick up sailors. Since David and I both knew a little Spanish, and Joel was trying to learn it (and not doing very well), we would occassionaly try to help him out by speaking a little. My standard greeting to them for most of that year was "Hola, marineros" in a fake-sexy come-hither tone. So I have a little "sailor" history. My former instructor bred her sister's New Zealand TB to Donnersohn (a famous Hanoverian) 3 times. All have names of favorite places in NZ that begin w/ D. Dunedin was the only one that was born before I left. I have a funny naming story - but it's for a dog, not a horse. When I was about 5 or 6, we got a Scottie. My mother had an album of Scottish music sent to her by a friend, and her fav song had a refrain that was something like "Come to me Geordie. Geordie, my love." She didn't really hear any of the rest of the lyrics. She's not big on lyrics generally, lol. It was sung by a man, so she assumed "Geordie" was his wife/lover/dream girl. She insisted that the new dog (a female) be named Geordie, after that song. Turns out, that song is a man calling for his son to come home safe from the war. Geordie is a common Scottish nickname for George (or a derisive one for someone who sides w/ the English - follower of King George). Never female. After she found that out (the dog was probably 5 or 6 years old by then, lol), she insisted the dog's name was Geordine, but she was always really Geordie.
