    Blue Roan is fading Brown

My Blue Roan Gelding is turning Brown on me, form the hot summer days and sweat. He does get hosed off after rides, but he is still turning different shades of brown where he sweats, such as birdle bath, saddle pad, girth area. I've been bathing him and used Absorbine Sun protection afterwards. Any suggestion on what i can do to turn him Blue roan (black) again.

    Thanks!

Stay out of the sun. I've known people who show "black" horses that will put them on night-only turnoutto keep them from fading. This year has been really bad (I'm in TX, though) - one "black" horse at my barn is nearly bucksin, especially on his flanks!

I think there were some people who fed BOSS (Black Oil Sunflower Seeds) and some other supplements for this, mainly to keep the coat shiny, but some also keep the color darker. Hopefully they will chime in here.

I'm not concerned about color--there's a saying that may apply here: "A good horse is never a bad color"--but I have seen a SmartPak supplement for black horses. I don't know if it would help with your problem, it also might test at a show like other color supplements.

ditto the others on keeping him out of the sun as much as possible.  You also might look into purchasing one of Cashel Company’s new lightweight fly sheets for him.  It blocks UV rays and is cool enough even for our disgustingly hot Texas summers.
The main ingredient in the supplements for black horses is Paprika so go get as big a container of Paprika you can find and start feeding him about 3 TBS daily.  I also like Rice Bran oil or some other good quality oil (cocosoya, etc) to help keep moisture in their coats during the hot weather.

I have a very dark bay/seal brown mare, so I feel your pain. Unfortunately once they fade there is no getting that true color back until the next hair coat grows in (in the change of seasons). I feed my mare BOSS, flax and rice bran, and keep a fly sheet on her (she is 24/7 turnout) and she still looks like a buckskin at the moment, BUT the fading is more even, and she still has a ridiculously shiny and smooth coat.  Even though she fades, if someone where to meet her for the first time they don't realize she is faded because her coat is still so healthy. I am not sure which supplement to contribute the coat to the most, as they all help in different ways, and I highly recommend them all (and as far as the Omega 6 levels in BOSS, you aren't feeding that much-a cup a day-and it actually made my old man move better, so don't worry about that).
I have heard good things about Paprika and plan to try that, but just remember it helps the growing hairs, not the ones that are already on the horses coat.  Start feeding it 1-2 months before winter growth/summer shedding shows up, right on until the new coat is fully in. I don't remember how it works, but it helps the hair shaft keep from fading and have a truer lasting color, but from what I understand there really is no point in feeding it year round, only when the horse is growing in a coat. Also, the capsaicin in paprika can cause it to test positive in competitions, so you wouldn't want to feed it while showing.

48farm, oh i know a good horse is any color :) I am just sad that his stunning Blue Roan color is fading.

I will try BOSS, he is already getting flax, so will try rice bran too, would be good for my TB mare too, since she has her hooves full with her high energetic son lol.

I will try paprika come fall and see how it works. His coat is still shiny and healty looking, just brown patches everywhere. like his head is all black except for where is bridle sits and where he sweats, there he is brown.

He is turned out 24/7 with shelter. He had a fly sheet on him until it was found in shreds and after 3 sheets i said enough is enough. Plus our summer, excuse me - what summer, has been very cool with a lot of rain, more than normal.

    thanks for the info!
