Please, check this page out. In my personal opinion, this is crazy and stupid. And some of the stories sound a bit "make-believe". Your thoughts on this? http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/features/meateatinghorses-190.shtml
"Have you given the horse its strength or clothed its neck with a flowing mane? Did you give it the ability to leap forward like a locust? It's majestic snorting is something to hear! It paws the earth and rejoices in its strength." -God in Job 39:19-21

Re: Man-eating... horses?
Well, the article is written in a way that makes me envision snarling, maddened killers, and feels a little sensationalized. The Lucknow Killer and Rysdyk are extreme examples of aggressive behavior, and without knowing the stimuli those animals were exposed to, it is difficult to analyze why they reacted the way they did.
In truth I am not so surprised at the idea of equines consuming meat. Both my horses have been known to eat the turkey or roast beef out of a sandwich. Both were/are thoroughbreds. However, that has never been a standard source of nutrition in their diets, but rather isolated incidents, along with crackers, muffins, and the odd bag of cheerios.
In Africa, male baboons are known to steal young antelope and eat them, but common thought insists that they are mainly fruit and nut eaters. If one species is capable of omnivorous behavior, as in this example, is it really so far fetched to imagine that equines are not? In addition, there are examples of aggressive behavior in modern equines that clearly demonstrates their ability to overwhelm a foe or predator. How many horses have chased a dog from the pasture, clearly intent on biting if they are able? How many more have threatened humans with teeth or heels when provoked?
What is most intriguing to me is the idea of lost or dampened knowledge regarding the behavior of equines, dark or otherwise. This book should be an interesting read. Thanks for sharing the link!

Re: Man-eating... horses?
I am not impressed by the article. If horse were made to eat meat they would have different teeth. As far as "man-eating" horses, sure, a horse will bite to protect itself. A very, very angry and abused horse could certainly become habituated to using its teeth to keep humans away, or even actually chasing them. But it's not going to EAT a human if it killed it. We've all been bitten or nipped by a horse, but we're not "romanticizing" the horse b/c we're not afraid of our horses eating us. And maybe you could train a horse to eat meat, but the diet would not be healthy. The horse's digestive system is made for consuming grasses, not meat.
All the stories the author cited are from centuries ago, and we all know how stories can be twisted so many times in their re-telling that they don't even resemble fact. I suspect that the author is trying to make a name for himself by "discovering" a buried "truth". His reference the Jane Goodall, and her chimpanzee research, is a good clue to that.
ETA-- TGK, male baboons do have canines and can eat the meat they kill. I believe baboons are considered omnivores, not herbivores. I've read about them killing other primates, as do chimpanzees.

Re: Man-eating... horses?
Exactly, some of those stories are really old, and just like you said, they have probably been twisted so many times there's no telling what could be true (if there is any truth in some of them). Yes, I have heard of horses being trained to eat meat, and eat something out of a sandwich, etc. But this article makes it seem like we horse lovers are completely blind to the fact that our equine friends are vicious killers out to get us. P.S. If you don't hear from me, my horse ate me. :P (I really think it will happen.... not.)

Re: Man-eating... horses?
I didn't even finish the article, I was snickering at the stories. Just today the horse we're training was out in the pasture with me and I was eating a ham sandwhich. She seemed interested, so I offered her a bite and she tasted it and spat it all over me, shaking her head and giving the 'that's so wierd' lip curl. She actually later got mad at me for giving it to her. God created horses to eat grass, and, while I do believe there are inicidents like a horse becoming savagely mean, I don't think it's very possible that it was a 'human eater.' By the way TylersCountryGirl, love that last line, 'P.S. If you do't hear from me, my horse ate me.' :) smiles all around to that one! :):):):):):):):):)
