The horse color that really interests me is the cream color of the American Cream Draft Horse. These horses are cream with amber eyes and can have white on the face and legs. The thing with theses horses is that the color breeds true, even when bred to a horse of another color. The foundation dam apparently only produced cream horses no matter what she was bred to, and her offspring did the same. I'd think there'd be palominos, buckskins and smokey blacks turning up in the breed, but no, only creams. So it must be a mutation of some sort and a dominate one at that.

in the summer my hair is chestnut at the roots and fades into blonde ( no i dont dye it)

sunny is a registered FQH but if you go into all the technical terms and not by breeds my best friend and i discovered he is a minimal sabino sorrel

My hair is red but fades to a lighter color if I am inside too much. It gets more red in the sun. The pictures of the Friesian are very cool. I have never seen a picture of one faded. We have a horse that is black in the winter and very dark bay in the spring when she sheds off. WE had a filly onece that was born black and then shed to bay with roaning over the hips and sided then in the fall when she put her winter coat on she was black again but in the spring she was a mix of bay and gray then turned dark gray. But each spring she went through the bay mix before truning grey.

Jessi -- her son breeds corn snakes and ball pythons. I think those are the two snakes with the CRAZIEST colour breeders! I have two lizards, but I just got them because they are cool and fun to play with -- I don't give a darn if they are dalmation flame leopard dark phase stripey magic whosey-whatsit!

Thank you! That is what I was trying to say... I almost used Fresians as an example but decided not to since I've never personally owned or worked with one. (It's on my wish list, though!)

Yes, Solo, I COMPLETELY agree with you!!! If the horse were some plain jane color, would you still breed to it? If no, then don't! I LOVE horse color, and have those I prefer, but color is the last thing one should look at!

What kind of reptiles does she breed? I know leopard geckos have some strange colors/names... one of mine is a blizzard? Looks pink to me ;)

Oh, Jessi, you would looooooooove talking to my riding buddy -- she is really into colour genetics too. It's funny talking to her because her son also breeds reptiles and reptile people are even worse than horse people about making up names for all the colour combinations and then charging you extra for them.

I do quite enjoy all the horse colour variation, I just hate when people feel like they have to make up a special name for everything and then breed for it no matter what the actualy HORSE underneath the colour looks like. You should see the GODAWFUL stallion they breed all the time at NCState University -- but he's a paint, so they love to breed him!

I always have to correct people when they say Anke is a palomino. She's a chestnut w/ flaxen mane & tail! She's 100% Haflinger.

Bella is black, though only her winter coat fades. Which is strange, since she's outside longer when she has her summer coat. She's so dark & shiny, it looks like she has rainbows or diamonds in her fur.

I think that means you're not a horse

I've seen this true black before, in fact; I think it's (around here anyways) actually called "blue".

I am by no means any sort of expert, but this just doesn't make sense to me. Does the true black horse have special magical powers to resist the sun's rays? My hair is brunette, but it "fades" to reddish blonde when I'm out in the sun a lot... does that mean I'm not a "true" brunette?

Our old Appy is a red roan but she is pretty white now. She has a few small spots left whth a shado of redness on her lower legs. Her whole front was red when she was young and she had a big blanket.

that's one of the things about Appies I love, they're ever-changing! i enjoy looking at baby pictures of Apps and comparing them to their grown up coats and patterns; some of them (in fact, most of them) you would not believe they're the same horse. You never know what you're gonna get when they're born compared to how they're going to change!

Yeah, my understanding (though it's been a looooong time since my genetics courses) is that a true black won't fade, but a sooty black does because of the cream gene. Though there's a definite possibility that I'm just all mixed up, too! lol
