This is a bit off-subject, but I know I mentioned Ross's sister's cat rescue before, the one that is going for 501c3 status right now. They have lost 4 kittens so far out of two litters of four each to distemper within the past week. They were separated because they were strays, but I guess one of the litters was infected with distemper already and it is highly contagious even on clothes hours later. Most cats are not vulnerable to it because they have been vaccinated, but these kittens were too young to be vaccinated yet - usually their mothers' milk would have protected them, but they were strays. It has been and will be a hard couple of days. We lost Bo, the first one, last Wednesday. His brother Moe died yesterday, Po died last night, and Corina (of a different litter) died today. Already one of Corina's sisters isn't doing well.

I want to remind everyone to vaccinate your animals regularly - I put off my cat Holly's vaccinations for a few months because of money, and I am kicking myself - she had no contact with these cats, but because I brought my dirty clothes home after giving Moe an injection of fluids, there is a slight chance she could have been infected. From what I have been told, because she was previously vaccinated she should be okay, but the thought that I put my girl in danger for that really hit home for me. Since she is an indoor cat, I felt like the vaccines were okay to put off - I won't do that again.

Just one of her ears is going to need opened up but our vet told us that we should not even give shots right now because we are having this unusually high heat and it could seriously effect the horses. So that will probably wait for the cooler months. She will let me rub them though so it shouldn't be a problem when it comes time.

I will have pics of them tomorrow. They were given to the horse trader. There is a five year old leopard app who supposedly rides and an 11 yr old mustang mare who has barely had anything done with her. She has a shoulder length mane but it is tangled so badly that I can only hope I can save it. I got them for a good price because he couldn't run the mare through the auction because of her tattoo and the app has a ugly scar on his back left hindquarter and he is underweight. They were supposedly former rescue horses that the lady couldn't care for anymore. I honestly did not even get a good look at them, I just bought them. they are out in a 100 acre pasture and they would not come to me. They did get penned up tonight when they came in to eat so I will be able to tell you all about him tomorrow. I am going to go out and see them in the morning and see if the app really is rideable.

Missy was actually pretty good this year. There were not many fireworks because we are in a burn ban and they banned bottle rockets and stuff like that.

When I get everything back I will pm you a copy.

I finally caught up last night with the dozen or so pages I was behind on this thread after being away for a while.

The story of Kat and Lily has been so much fun and enlightening to follow. Your talents are amazing Amber. And your blog keeping us updated on Lily's progress is fantastic, Flakemusic. Just wanted you to know how much I've enjoyed following this adventure. You could turn this thread into a book about your adventures with your wild mustangs!

Pictures and stories on your new babies? How was Missy with the fireworks? I went out to make sure Lily wasn't in her normal pasture as it borders houses and people around here are irresponsible with fireworks (which are illegal in IL, but too many people defy that law to be stopped.) My trainer had already made sure no horses were in pastures around there, and Lily was munching hay calmly in her stall even though the gelding next to her wasn't so happy. My trainer's gelding that I sometimes ride was in one of the pastures close to the barn and the poor thing looked terrified. Even the cow was looking lively, and that's saying a lot.

I am interested to hear more about your progress with the 501 c3 when you hear more. I am hoping that someday my rescue will be almost like an offshoot of Hillery and Paul's, since they will have a lot of contacts and 501 c3 status. They are also planning on expanding their home, land, facilities, etc to include large animal accommodations which would be helpful. ;)

What is it with Ross and Bellas? Tell him his Bella here is jealous

All the animals are doing great and dont tell anyone but (whispers: I got two new horses today a 5 yr old Appy and an 11 yr old mustang)

The 501 c 3 is still in the works. I am helping plan a horse show and working on tranportation for three rescue horses right now so that is keeping me kind of busy.

Lily does love little animals. She used to "pet" the barn cat with her nose when she first came here, lol.

How are all of your animals? How is the 501 c3 status going? Ross's sister and her husband are in the middle of applying for that now for their cat rescue, which has officially been started up. It is called Open Doors and I've been busy helping them with the 8 cats that they already are getting ready to be adopted out!

I'm trying to convince them they need a couple of minis on their property (they live on 5 acres) because they're building a barn for feral cats to be able to come and go in. Speaking of which, Lily was enamored with Bella, my trainer's adorable mini filly when we walked by her pasture today. I've noticed she loves small creatures - cats, dogs, minis, and ponies. She's so adorably curious with them.
