Here in Portland, OR, the bikers are a pretty strong lobbying group. They want their priveledges and have it paid for by motorist. So any kind of bike tax is shouted down.

Bicycle riders make me mad!! They think they own the road. They whine 'til they get bike lanes, then they don't use then and complain about motorists not "sharing the road". To bicyclists, "sharing the road" means motorists have to yield to the bikes. In CA, bicyclists must follow the rules of the road, just like motorists, but they blow stop signs and red lights, ride on sidewalks, etc, yet the police do nothing. In CA they are not considered pedestrians, they are considered vehicles. Our road is a 55 MPH 2-lane (one lane each way) road. When the bicyclists hear a car coming, they swerve out into the middle of the lane so you cannot pass without driving on the opposite side of the road. We experience this all the time. They should have to have bicycle rider's licenses and pay a registration fee for their bikes, too! Then at least I would have some satisfaction knowing they're paying their way.

Transportation is certainly vital to our lifestyles. What are politicians to do when faced with lower fuel tax revenues (high mileage vehicles, hybrids, electrics) and ever increasing costs for maintaining our road systems?

Charge by the common denominator, mileage!

In the days, how were horse and buggies taxed? They were taxed, right?

Haha! I wonder what Star would think if I hitched her up.

I nearly croaked when I saw how much gas is taxed in England. I always knew it was higher than here but didn't really know how much.

It's around 60%!!

The mid-January price for diesel in the UK was 141.3p a litre. But without tax and duties, it would be only 59.8p. Unleaded petrol cost 132.9p, although without tax and duties it would be a much more manageable 52.8p.

In the news: Oregon to study tax on miles driven

This law, when enacted will apply to gas, hybrid, electric, steam and all forms of transportation on wheels and on the roads. Don't suppose they'd tax bikes nor horse-drawn. But if it came down to the definition of transport as a wheeled vehicle, I'm going horseback. They can kiss my horse's arz!
