National Riding Instructors Convention

Free Charles Owen helmet to ARIA certified riding instructors!

In celebration of The American Riding Instructors Association's 25th Anniversary, Charles Owen and The American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA) have teamed up to present a custom-fit Charles Owen helmet to each ARIA Certified Instructor in attendance at the Convention. Even those who earn their certification at the Convention will ( if they pass) be sent their Charles Owen helmet gift certificate with their results!

The Convention will be held on November 18-21 at the Naples Grande Beach Resort in Naples, Florida. Featured speakers include George H. Morris, Denny Emerson, Jane Savoie, Susan Harris, Peggy Brown, Sgt. Jerry Mayo of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Atty. Julie Fershtman, Jochen Schleese, Roy Burek, and many others.

A Test Center will be held for ARIA Instructor Certification testing; private mentoring and guidance will be offered, small networking sessions with speakers will be held, and there will still be time offered for quiet beach walks and poolside relaxing under the palm trees!

Fourth Annual Pink Ribbon Round–Up

The fourth annual Pink Ribbon Round-Up (PRR) is scheduled for October 9 and 10, 2009. The PRR is a two-day charity event for breast cancer research featuring a Western-themed gala and horseback ride.

Lexus of North Hills is the venue for the kick-off Western-themed gala on Friday, October 9. At $65 per person, the evening will include food, beverages, coffee and dessert bar, live entertainment, a silent auction, Chinese auction and a raffle for a big-screen, high-definition television set with the winner entered into a drawing for a three-year lease on a 2010 Lexus ES350. Mary Robb Jackson, KDKA-TV News general assignment reporter, will serve as honorary chairperson and Stoney Richards of Y-108 FM radio as master of ceremonies.

On Saturday, October 10, the PRR trail ride will take place in North Park from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The entry fee for riders is $25, plus each participant is asked to raise $100 minimum in donations with prizes being awarded to the top four fund raisers. All registered riders will receive lunch, a T-shirt, gift bags and treats for their horses. Riders who have registered by September 30 and contributed their $100 in support donations will receive a ticket to the Friday evening gala. Riders must bring their own horse.

“In the past three years, we’ve raised over $105,000 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Pittsburgh affiliate,” according to Patricia Hodder, PRR founder and president.

New this year, PRR is participating in the Comprehensive Care Center for Women’s “Woman to Woman” campaign to collect braziers for distribution to women of Uganda, Africa. People are asked to bring new or gently used bras to the gala or trail ride. Comprehensive Care Center for Women is a division of Compression Management Services, Inc. – a Pittsburgh-based firm providing products for women who have undergone breast surgery.

Compete for CASH PRIZES as you trek through the beautiful, rugged trails of Shaver Lake (just east of Fresno) in a game of stamina and determination. This game of skill and smarts is open to riders of all levels. Horses need to be conditioned for long-distance runs and well-heeled on trails that include streams, logs, rough terrain, and heavy brush.

The ultimate goal of the Trekk is to finish a 15 mile course with the shortest time. Gather “flags” along the way to reduce your time. Each rider will be issued a card. As riders pass the “flags”, they will punch the card with that flag’s punch key. Each flag reduces your time by a time specified on the game map.

All horses must pass a veterinarian check prior to, and after the ride. Any horse not passing the vet check in the morning will not be able to compete. Horses that do not pass a vet check after the ride are disqualified from placing in the competition. Therefore, rider skill in how to manage their horse’s stamina is critical for this event.

The event will take place at the Old Gun Club on Edison property, 2 miles east of Shaver Lake on Dinkey Creek Road. While camping is not available directly on site due to Edison liability policy, ample camping areas can be found all along Dinkey Creek Road.

The Oregon Horse Center is holding a NW Mountain Trail Clinic April 17th - 19. It will be a great learning experience for those of you who may be wanting to warm up for your summer's worth of "real" outdoors trail riding, or even those who wish to return to the Oregon Horse Center for our May 15-17th Northwest Mountain Trail Spring Adventure. Perhaps even warm up for the November Mountain Trail Championships? Maybe your looking for pointer's on horses at home, come watch other people go through the obstacles with their horses. You may find the answer for your own horse, or another at home.

Either way bring your horses, friends and even family to join us for a great time.

There will be plenty to watch all day Friday - Sunday so come on by to watch it all happening. Our Feed Room Restaurant will be open for anyone wanting a snack or yummy meal.

It will be a truly fun event for everyone! Exhibitors and Spectators both!

Summer Horseback Riding Lessons

Looking for something fun to do this summer? The University of Connecticut is providing horse riding lessons. Polo, Hunt Seat and Western lessons are open to students, adults and children (age 11 and older). Beginner to Advanced levels will be offered. There will be (4) 3 week sessions during the summer; $210 to $315.00 per session.

In addition to riding lessons, UConn will offer Trail Riding for the Intermediate or higher level rider, Session l June 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, and 18, Session ll July 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, and 23. Riders must be 13 years of age or older. The rider may choose English or Western style. Ride the UConn trail system and learn best practices trail riding including how to follow markings. Lessons will be held in the Horsebarn Hill Arena, UConn, Storrs, CT. The first riding session starts 5/11. Registrants are urged to register quickly, as classes fill fast. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum of eight riders per lesson. Warren-McMullin Dressage and Cutler Farm present a clinic with Conrad Schumacher. The event will be hosted at Cutler Farm in Medfield, Massachusetts (338 North Street, Medfield, MA 02052). The clinic will take place April 27th-29th. Auditors fees start at $40/day and $20/half day. Anyone interested in auditing is asked to RSVP by April 24th.
