I have come to the realization that...

Stalls are nothing more than giant litter boxes for a 1000lb animals! LOL! I go out every monday and clean 15-18 stalls. Lots of work, it usually takes me about 5-6 hours. I am getting faster tho...but i still have to hit the ibuprophen when i get home!

hey getting a job with horses isn't that hard what's hard is being willin gto do the work. I'have dragged nonhorsey or even mild enthusiast types along for a day at the barn and they never did it again. Getting down and doing the dirty work means you love it not just like it. Painkillers are helpful though. SmileJust think the more you're around the more experince you gain. You'll be there when there's injuries so you'll learn how to treat them. Hang in there it may not seem like you're learning about it's invauble

Oh, i am not goin' anywhere. I really enjoy the work, as odd as that may sound. Good way to build muscles and lose weight! Plus, the more i am around the barn, the more the horses get to know me. i don't want them to associate me with just work. They get scratchies too!

I can tell you, cat litterboxes smell a whole lot better! Nothing stinks worse than mare pee when she is in heat! LOL!

Straw stalls or shavings/wood chips? Cause if it's shavings I will be so jealous! I think I would pay someone money to let me clean a shavings stall! Lol. Keep on the drugs. Next you'll be using the equine ointment on yourself! Lol.

I work my lessons off by cleaning stalls and grooming/tacking horses for my trainer. I love it. He is very picky about how his stalls are cleaned and usually does the major cleaning himself and then I just maintain throughout the day. The sick part is that I wish he would let me do the morning cleaning/picking more often. There is something very soothing and relaxing about getting a stall nice and clean. Thank god there is a forum like this where I can say this and not be told I am totally nuts, just a little perhaps.

LOL I hear ya! Minis aren't too bad luckily Smile The only horses stalled (other than the minis), are a pony in a 16 by 16 and Radi in a 16 by 32, so it's not too bad luckily! But I do love the time with the horses, so like you, I don't mind Smile

LOL!!!!!!! this post reminds me just how glad I am that all our horses have gone out in the fields and I only have about 3/4 stables to do in the morning. In the depth of winter we had 25 to do between 2 of us plus feeding/sweeping/haying etc and it was HARD WORK.

You'll get faster, don't worry. When I started working with horses it took me 1/2hr to do 1 stable. Now I would be cross if I got less that 7 done in an hour!

They've put a man on the moon, but they still can't design a package for likits that you can open in less than 1/2hour

Re: I have come to the realization that...

I LOVE my LitterMaid boxes. I do a bit of tidying up every night when I get home, but no more big scooping jobs!

I also love cleaning stalls. I get a very "zen" feeling from creating order out of the chaos. I'm looking forward to farmsitting again this summer. I'll have 3 stalls to clean + a one-time job with the llama.

I wish I could find a farm close to home that needed weekend stalls done. Everyone around here offers them to "working students" as in, work off your lessons. I don't want/need that. I have my own to work. Please, just let me clean up the poop! Now that's a horse lover.

Noo! Not litter boxes! lol. We consider Dino's stall his "house," the trailer his "limo" or "partybus" and horseshow stalls his "apartments." lol! But yes, once you start cleaning stalls you really realize how nice it is to be able to leave your horse outside 24/7. Oh well, Dino will just have to keep living in his house! lol

LOL...I would love to have a littermaid box. I have 3 boxes. I use wood pellets to keep the smell down. I can't handle the smell of clay litter. It has something in it that drives my nose crazy! I try every once in awhile, but the anything that had clay in it is awful. So I use the all natural stuff or wood pellets.

Re: I have come to the realization that...

Funny how things affect people differently. I used to have a full (unfinished) basement and 6 boxes with pelleted litter. No matter what I did, I always smelled the wet litter in the house. I liked the idea of pellets, but they just did not work for us. Phew!

I broke down and bought the LM for the first floor a year, when Ella was having issues. I thought maybe some of it was related to where the boxes were kept (she needed "happy pills" to deal with the stress of divorce/moving). Once I decided I was moving to the East Coast, I bought a second box so that they'd be used to them when we moved into a smaller living space. It was also a "selling point" for potential landlords & roommates that my boxes were constantly cleaned.

I'm so thankful they worked out. Even though I have to keep them in my kitchen (ick) they stay clean and mostly odor-free.

I have two cats in the house, and the only litter i use is Scoop Away. I can hardly smell them with that kind. NEVER use Tidy Cat. What a joke!
