    Hind leg lameness

My 5 yr old gelding has been short striding with his left hind, but only under saddle and only at the walk for about a week. There are no swellings, hot spots or any visible injuries. When asked to trot, he is very even after about 6 strides or so. After 10-15 minutes of trotting, he will still short stride at the walk. He eventually warms out of the lameness at the walk but, the next day we start all over again. Any ideas out there? I can't decide if I should continue working him lightly, or just turn him out for awhile.

Sounds kind of like the problem we had, it turned out to be a bruised frog. Have your vet or farrier(both actually) have a good look at feet, use hoof testers. Vet can do a flexion test for you too! Those bruises can take a long time to fully heal, I think Aragorn was on rest and daily walks in the arena for a week and a half, maybe 2 weeks?
I see my thighs have grown since the last time I wore these breeches........

Thanks! A bruised frog was not something I had thought of. I still can't figure out why he would not be lame at the trot, though.

Aragorn was not off at the canter during that time, and only slightly (teeny tiny) off at the walk. Use youe vet and farrier, that is what they are there for! Good luck!
