I also ride a SSH and love her. I now have 2 spotted babies off of her and just started my 3 1/2 yr. old under saddle this spring. I love to watch the TWH's but the camel walk of theirs kills my back.

Well, I'm grounded at the moment so I'm not riding anything (LOL), but my horses are TWH and SSH.  I agree with saddle_up's observation that each horse has a little bit different way of going, and that makes it exciting and interesting.   Flashcube can even go sideways, when provoked!  Cool

I have two Rocky Mountain Horse mares, both 5 years of age. I've had them since they were 4 months old, and they are awesome! Both have sweet, easy going temperaments (my Red Chocolate mare is a reformed spooker, she was kind of hot but has really calmed down with training... fancy that!) and both have that classic rocky color. One is Chocolate and in my signature, and the other is Red Chocolate, both with flaxen mane and tail. I will more than likely only buy Rockies from now on, they are perfect for me! And boy, are they smooth.

Everyone who has a RMH says how sweet, kind and versatile they are. I love that chocolate color in your sig.

Has anyone else noticed that Rockys tend to be neck huggers? You walk up to them and they wrap their heads around your neck. It's what first attracted me to Minx. I thought it was just her, but I've been hugged by several Rockys/Kentuckys since then.

Thanks for the comment on my chocolate mare. :D She is very sweet, and definitely versatile!

Can't help it, lol - another pic of her.

Luckylady, Rain walked up to me when I picked her out at 2 months old and did exactly that.  She was in a field separate from her momma and placed her head on my shoulder, just hanging out. I knew she was mine from that second on! She's my dream horse, and everything fell into place after that. :D

My horse Smoke, is a Morgan/ QH cross. He racks, and it is SOOO smooth. He also trots (the QH in him), and it's not that great! :) I've also had a TWH in the past and my parents own 2 TWH's, one of which I ride when I visit KY. Morgans and Walkers are great to have for trail riding if you want a smooth "non bumpy" ride :)

Wow! A gaited Morgan! My Morgan doesn't gait. I've been looking for one that does... not as replacement but an addition. I love my mischievous girl. She's the bay in my sig.

I think a KMSH or a SSH might be fine, too. or a TWH. or...

P.S. If I put a singlefooting or racking horse in the pasture with her, i wonder if she'd learn. She is such a copycat! Wink

Re: What breed gaited horse do you ride?

I have a Standardbred off the track. He has been retired for at least 5 years but not ridden much. I got him a year ago and taught him to trot. He is having a hard time cantering so I've decided to teach him to rack. I have started him by asking for the thing they do just beyond a walk but before a pace or trot. My question is... once I get him into a lateral gait, how do I change it from a pace (which is very hard to sit) to a rack? Any advice would be great.

I am 56 and went to the gaited horses.  I ride a spotted saddle horse.  She is 1/2 paso and 1/2 foxtrotter.  I also have 4 reg. Paso finos.  I like the paso's size and speed.  they seem to be able to ride with quarter horses or ten. walkers.

    Husband rides a tenn. walker.

Re: What breed gaited horse do you ride?

    I'll tell you what

I been rodeo'n most my life and mostly have QH roping horses

I just aquired a sweet lil 4 year old missouri fox trotter filly and hopped on her today for the first time.

I just couldn't believe it, she saddled up, took the bit with a little coaxing, and walked right out the gate like nothing

I took a deep breath and held it while I got her up to speed... and nothing! no bone jarring trot like my others... we were eatin up trail like nothin, I had to look down to make sure we were actually trotting :p

then came this beautiful lope, the girl loves to run!

she took a second to stop, she never heard whoa before lol

we went for two hours, neither if us wanted to go home

talk about a pleasure to ride... sooo smooth

I'm glad I got one of them saddles with a beer holder... I can finally use it :D

oh and hey I'm new here...I'm stevie, nice meeting ya'll :)
