    Hoof trims for gaited horses

Ok, so the little sister has decided to hang on to her walking horse for a two month trial period and we have now moved her up to our farm her (was at her boyfriend's an hour plus away)... We tried shoeing her but she pulled a front shoe because they were so bad and trimmed them like a quarter horse, but I've been told the goal should be for her to be a bit longer in the toe... I know of two farriers in the area that work more specifically on trail walking horses, as opposed to my guy that does western/trail and hunter/jumper type clients.... Should I get a different farrier for her? Thanks, hope everyone is doing well!

If it's a trail horse, I don't see why there should be a longer toe. The difference in trims is usually to accentuate the gait, usually for showing. I understand the desire to make the horse step higher, look flashier, but if you're alone on the trail, no one's gonna see it to appreciate it. The long toes stress tendons and cause problems down the road. I'm not specialized in gaited horses, but I trim SEVERAL gaited trail horses. I find if they have the abitlity, a good,  barefoot trim is well balanced enough that they exhibit their own beautiful gait. Natural ability has more to do with it than the trim. Feet that hurt may step higher, but it's cruel to enocourage, and the horse pays for it eventually. Good genetics will show on their own, with the help of a balanced trim-happy feet =happy gaits on the trail.I would stay with your usual guy for this trail horse.

    Double Ditto what Boosiler said.

I've been riding Walking horses for 17 years.  I don't do anything but trail ride and parades.

No long toes, no high heels.  No weighted shoes.

I don't even use the traditional keg shoe on any of my Walkers.

I use St. Croix rim shoes for gripStick out tongue

Toes "Quarter Horse" short, angles natural.

Everyone does their inherent gait and does it well (smooth).

I also ride these same Walkers barefoot in the winter time.  They gait the same barefoot as with shoes on, but I don't ask them to "walk on" if we are on a gravel road or the blacktop.

If trail riding is the goal for now, a normal trim by any qualified blacksmith is what is neededBig Smile

I have to agree with the others.  When I got my TWH the people were so pushy about keeping his hooves at theses particular angles. I don't even remember what they were now, but I have had 2 farriers, (one actually worked at a gaited horse farm for a long time) tell me that unless you are trying to show them with accentuated gaits (not normal) then trim them to there natural hoof angle! Shadow has been great, he is bare foot and never had a problem.
