    Owning a Horse ranch

I love horses. And I am young not saying how young though. In the future I want to think about starting a horse ranch. I need anything. Advice? Help? Pros? Cons? Easy? Challenging? Fun? Need to knows? Need to be able tos?

Holy cow, what a question.  You need to have lots of time and disposable income, that's what!  Plus years of horsey experience and it'd probably be a good idea to marry a farrier or a vet, while you're planning.  Can't work a full time job somewhere else and run a farm, that I know for sure.

Huh?  What job?  My day job?  If that's what you mean, yes, I love it!  (I'm a wildlife biologist)

The other day I saw my new favorite bumper sticker:

"Any cowgirl can ride a horse, but it takes a #&!@ genius to make a living at it."

I have a friend who has done what you want, but she has had years and years of experience first working for a large barn/breeding/training facility first.  Go find a barn run by someone whose horse experience you respect, and volunteer to muck out stalls, groom horses, feed, be a go-fer -- do anything.  When you are older, you will have a job waiting for you more than likely.  From there, you learn, you learn, you learn.  If when you are older and you are still wanting to do this, you will then have the experience and practical knowledge you need to run the business.  Finish school, go to college and take business courses.  Be a sponge around those who can help you realize your dream.  You may not be rich, and it's a heck of a lot of work, but if you truly want this, you can do it.

    Love that bumper sticker.!

You can also consider taking some horse management classes from a university / community college. They have so many more equine-related programs now. Horsey college students are soo lucky. some also offer online classes if you want to check 'em out.

BTW, Great bumper stickers.. My mom loved the one about starting out with a big fortune to achieve a small fortune!  Maybe we should start a bumper sticker thread lol!

    Re: Owning a Horse ranch

I got most of my first hands on horse experience at a therapeutic riding center for the mentally and physicallty disabled.  It was great cause I was absolutely horse crazy, and they needed volunteers.  I didn't know much, but they taught me a lot, and the head instructor and i are still good friends to this day. She's helped me out with my first horse (finding him, answering questions, stuff like that).  If you contact NARHA (the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) at narha.org , you can find a center, if you wish.
