Cleaning a horse's sheath with feminine soap

Does anyone know if using feminine hygiene soap is ok for cleaning a horse's sheath? Is the PH similar? Where I live we don't have anything specific for that job. I usually put some baby oil and leave a little bit, then clean with baby soap and warm water, but it occurred to me that maybe the feminine soap might be better...

Had you asked this question a couple weeks ago, I'd be able to tell you what my vet used on Bailey (he kicks, so I took advantage when his teeth were floated).  I DO remember him saying NOT to use soap on The Part and that rinsing with a hose can force the gunky bits up higher rather than flushing them out.

My barn manager (who in 40 years has never owned a gelding & watched with great interest) may remember better than I do at this moment. I'll email her and get back to you.

I don't know about feminine soap, but I do know that KY jelly is a safe and readily available alternative to sheath cleaning products.

For my part, I would not use anything with the word "soap" attached to it for sheath cleaning.

A lady posted on one of the message boards I belong to, that she uses KY Jelly instead of the Excalibur Sheath Cleaner.

That way if she isn't able to get That Part squeaky clean, it won't hurt the horse.

I had some explaining to do when hubby saw THAT in the WalMart bagStick out tongue

Another trick I learned from one of these boards is to spray a mineral oil/water mix up inside the night before the sheath cleaning is to be done.  That gives the smegma a better chance to loosen up and makes for faster, easier cleaningAngel

Maybe this is why I never get excited about spring?  I have always had geldingsGeeked
