    Black Oil Sunflower Seeds...

Is it the coat of the seed or the seed itself, or both that is so good for horses??

good question I never thought about which it is Smile I'd imagine that the seed has the most nutrition in it but the shell probably has some value as well? My sister fed those to our old shetland and she grew in such a nice spring coat this year! First time in about 5 years she has done so Ooo

My guess is that it's the seed, with the hull contributing mostly fibre. Most of the birds eat the kernel only, discarding the hull; while I see blue jays gulping them down whole and chickadees carrying them away I know that in most cases they're intent on carrying them away to store, tucking them into a crack in the bark of a tree or burying them in the snow. If they remember where they put them they'll remove the hull before eating the seed.
