Arts and crafts with bailing twine

It does not take us long to stuff an empty feed bag with bailing twine.  Just tossing them into the burn pile seems like an aweful waste.  Is there some way to recycle them into something crafty?

I've woven them into six strand cargo straps.  My mother-in-law has woven a few 12 strand lead ropes.  Of course we've used bailing twine for just about anything it could be used for without looking so tacky, (i.e. holding up tomato plants, cinching up newspapers and magazines for recycling, etc.)

On the other hand, maybe a tacky looking belt loop is what some low-riding pant wearing teenager would consider cool!

I made a hay net out of used baling twine.

Back in 70's I was a whizz at macramé -- we had plant hangers everywhere.  Perhaps one of these days it will see a revival :)

Not sure how bright orange plant hangers made from baling twine would look though...

Most of the 6 strand straps I've made are looped on one end and then tucked back in on the other end.  They are around 4.5 feet long.  Several are hanging off gates so when we need to keep them open, we could tie the gate off to the closest post or fence.  6 strands come from just one feeding and it takes me a lot of "thinking time" to weave one.

Hay net idea would be good to try if I could keep my macrame knots fairly even.  Got to practice, I guess!

Not so sure about any arts and crafts, but one of Prac's readers came up with a pretty good list of uses around the barn for baling twine. You'll have to wait to read it in the Rider to Rider column in the September issue though! ;-)

In the days of baling wire, I used to snicker at all the things at a friend's farm that was held up by baling wire.  Seemed everywhere one looked there was wire.  Now I'm wishing for a weaving machine that could make vehicle tow straps out of baling twine.

I'm looking forward to the September article.  Did it mention that baling twine could be stripped into dental floss?
