    IHSA in the city

Hey everyone, it's been awhile since I've been on here. I'm one quarter into my first year at DePaul University in Chicago, and really going crazy without horses. My school doesn't have an IHSA team, but many around me do, and I don't think it'd be too difficult to start up as long as I get enough people. I'm trying to reach as many riders as possible, and just wondering if anyone up here goes to DePaul/knows anyone who does? Also, anyone familiar with IHSA rules? I'm wondering if it's possible to combine students from two nearby universities if there's not enough interest in one school.

I was thinking about you today. Glad to see you on here.

I don't know about the IHSA thing though. You may have trouble actually doing a IHSA team. Mostly cause the school may not wanna end up paying for it. I know cause the college I'm going too, we had a group of people thinking about the same thing and basically got told you can do a  equestrian club but not a team cause we aren't paying for it(reading between the lines).and we had almost 20 people ready to go ect with more possibles. I mean it wasn't for lack of interest. very disappointing! Does your school have a prevet program ect other horse related majors that might be useful in lobbying for it?

The only other way I can see to do it is if you have enough people that own their own horses where you can get together and form the team indepedently? Basically just get together and go, start competing? I don't know if IHSA lets you do that but if you can I'd just make the team exsist then tell the school.

To ride on a horse is to fly without wings

There are times when you can trust a horse, times when you can't and times when you have to.

    Re: IHSA in the city

Hey there!  I looked into forming a dressage team at my school once, but never went through with it because I just didn't have the time.  As far as getting the school to pay for things, I think my school only pays for the team fee for IHSA for our hunt team.  All other showing expenses are paid by the team members.  So you might be able to convince your school to only pay for something small if you can't convince them to pay for everything.

The hardest part is finding a barn/trainer that will work with your team.  If your friends all have horses and you can ride together, that would be great, but what about when the team gets bigger?  What happens if someone joins who doesnt own a horse?  You need to find a stable and trainer that will accommodate the team as it grows.

I'm not sure about combining universities. You can also ask all these questions to the IHSA.  They should have some sort of section on their website to guide students on how to start a team.

Thank you to both of you, and it's nice being back on the boards! I missed everyone...
as for the people on the team having horses thing, since I don't even have a horse that could be difficult. I know that my university has a rule that if you have a certain number of people they will give you a $1,000 to start a club/team, so hopefully that could help? And then the IHSA website said that for schools w/o equestrian programs you can find a nearby instructor willing to give a discounted group lesson rate and use them as a coach. I would have to find someone within the university to be a sponsor, though, which might be difficult because IHSA rules said they should be someone with a knowledge of horses, and I don't know of anyone off the top of my head who has a riding background.
Nicole, I think you're right about the stable, too. The problem with the barns within 15 miles of the city is that they're mostly a bit smaller to accomodate the high land prices around here. The kinds of places we'd need are the barns by my house in Elgin, where they have 15-20 school horses.
Good suggestion about bringing the questions to the IHSA, I think I'll do that. It's hard finding other people who want to join, too. I know five to ten people have mentioned they miss riding to me, but our first quarter's over and it's such a big university I'll probably never see most of them again. So I'll probably end up posting flyers in January or something.
