    Squeaksmom:
Squeaker's papers say black.  She does shed in jet black and then fades, and her sire is buckskin, so she may be sooty black, which would be close.  She may also be brown.  I think only a genetic test would tell for sure.
My guess would be black... and the fading is due to the sun. ;-)

I have a bay... pretty straightforward there, and a sorrel... which could be subject to the sorrel/chestnut debate.  It says "sorrel" on his papers.  *shrugs*  I had an Arab that had an intersting color... the sellers called him a "sabino" because of the splashes of white on him.  My first horse was a Welsh Pony... sold to me as a "strawberry roan."  People would always come up to me and ask if he was a POA.

    CheyAut:

Stonepony, Lp is the gene that makes an appy an appy. Not the one that gives them white with spots, that's from several different genes called PATN. If a horse has Lp with no PATN, they are an appy, but not spotted. They'll have the appy characteristics (mottled skin, striped hooves, white sclera and varnish roaning). If a horse gets that AND at least one of the several PATN genes, then you get the white wtih spots (blanket, leopard, ect). If they ahve a PATN and TWO Lps, you get the homozygous appies, few spots, snowcap, ect. A horse wtih two Lp but no PATN is still homozygous, but they're still just a varnish roan.

The Lp study was to find where in the horse genome Lp is located, then there can be a genetic test (via mane or tail hair) to know if your horse has one or two Lp genes... plus it gets "us" one step further in understanding appaloosa genetics :)

Squeeks, it's always bad to try to guess colors off of shaved horses, but the shaved areas on your horse is what color blacks are typically when they're shaved.

One time my sis-in-law had a strawberry roan pony and one spring a neighber ask me when my sis-in-law had bought a pink horse?  LOL.

I read one time that true black is very rare and that they do not fade in the sun.  Do you think this is correct?

Our old Appy is a red roan but she is pretty white now.  She has a few small spots left whth a shado of redness on her lower legs.  Her whole front was red when she was young and she had a big blanket.

Yeah, my understanding (though it's been a looooong time since my genetics courses) is that a true black won't fade, but a sooty black does because of the cream gene.  Though there's a definite possibility that I'm just all mixed up, too! lol

that's one of the things about Appies I love, they're ever-changing!  i enjoy looking at baby pictures of Apps and comparing them to their grown up coats and patterns; some of them (in fact, most of them) you would not believe they're the same horse.  You never know what you're gonna get when they're born compared to how they're going to change!

I am by no means any sort of expert, but this just doesn't make sense to me.  Does the true black horse have special magical powers to resist the sun's rays?  My hair is brunette, but it "fades" to reddish blonde when I'm out in the sun a lot... does that mean I'm not a "true" brunette?

I've certainly seen different levels of fading... some blacks seem to fade more than others... but I've always seen some level of it on blacks that aren't blanketed/kept out of the sun.

I think that means you're not a horse Wink

I've seen this true black before, in fact; I think it's (around here anyways) actually called "blue".

just to make it a little more confusing!

Blacks fading or not has nothing to do with being "true" nor anything to do with a cream gene. Som blacks fade, some do not.

I don't think anyone would argue about a Friesian being a true black. Here is Radiance, unfaded and faded

I always have to correct people when they say Anke is a palomino. She's a chestnut w/ flaxen mane & tail! She's 100% Haflinger.

Bella is black, though only her winter coat fades. Which is strange, since she's outside longer when she has her summer coat. She's so dark & shiny, it looks like she has rainbows or diamonds in her fur.

Re: HORES COLORS--what color is your hores really?

Oh, Jessi, you would looooooooove talking to my riding buddy -- she is really into colour genetics too.  It's funny talking to her because her son also breeds reptiles and reptile people are even worse than horse people about making up names for all the colour combinations and then charging you extra for them.

I do quite enjoy all the horse colour variation, I just hate when people feel like they have to make up a special name for everything and then breed for it no matter what the actualy HORSE underneath the colour looks like.  You should see the GODAWFUL stallion they breed all the time at NCState University -- but he's a paint, so they love to breed him!

Yes, Solo, I COMPLETELY agree with you!!! If the horse were some plain jane color, would you still breed to it? If no, then don't! I LOVE horse color, and have those I prefer, but color is the last thing one should look at!

What kind of reptiles does she breed? I know leopard geckos have some strange colors/names... one of mine is a blizzard? Looks pink to me ;)

Thank you!  That is what I was trying to say... I almost used Fresians as an example but decided not to since I've never personally owned or worked with one.  (It's on my wish list, though!)

Jessi -- her son breeds corn snakes and ball pythons.  I think those are the two snakes with the CRAZIEST colour breeders!  I have two lizards, but I just got them because they are cool and fun to play with -- I don't give a darn if they are dalmation flame leopard dark phase stripey magic whosey-whatsit!
