My horse is sweating at rest.

My 17 year old QH gelding is sweating, just standing out in pasture. We live in Ca. It has been beautiful here the last few days...70. I take blankets off in the morn. This evening when I went out to blanket, he was sweating. His temp is under 100 and he is eating. His sprits seem fine. He is just sweating. I didn't see him playing or anything, so it cant be exercise. Is there any reason he would be sweating for no reason, beside that it is warmer than it should be? My other 2 geldings are not sweating. I am afraid it could be the begining of Cushings. Is sweating a first sign or would it be later in the progression of cushings? He doesnt have any other symptoms and this just came on today.

well its seems to be the exact sdame problem my horse has er well had - i went out to the barn one day and he was dripping sweat from his ears to just behind his shoulder (i realy mean dripping) and it wants hot out at all. Sunny is 7 so i was pretty worried so we had a vet come out because it had kept happening even thought i was hosing him off everyday and he had a week to rest. Our vet ran soem test and it showed that he was lacking in selenium and vitamin E . It also it called tying up - my mom and i did alot of reasearch on it after that

his symptoms that i noticed - profuce sweating when doing nothing, a small amount of stuffmess in legs, droopy almost depressed eyes

but his attitude and temp and all his vitals and eating habbits were the same.

we currently have him on a pure selenium and vitamin e suppliment and it stopped when he started to build up the vitamin.

if it continues i would call out your vet and run some tests

Hope this helps and good luck!

Before you put your horse on selenium get a VET's opinion first. Horses do need selenium and it's verrrryyy important but if you give too much you'll have even more problems. I can't remember the selenium toxicity signs, but any good vet book lists them.

Before you give any vitamin/mineral supplement, you should take the horse to an equine vet and get their opinion.

I hope he gets better! Good luck!

I agree with the others, have your vet check your horse.  I have a 22 yr old QG gelding who sometimes sweats in pasture when weather is humid and hot, and he is fine.  You don't say how much your horse was sweating; my QH just gets a bit sweaty in the neck area during humidity.  But if it is unusual for your horse, please have him checked; it could be a sign of something needing attention.
