    5 Year old Percheron/Standardbred Gelding

My cousin is potentially interested in this horse... basically for trail riding (western).

And... for my own curiosity's sake, how would this horse stack up as an English prospect?

I rather like him.  I own both a Standardbred and a Percheron.  I think he will be an awesome looking fellow.   I ride my Standardbred only English, and I ride my percheron both english and western, and  I find both breeds to be very level headed.  She would just need to make sure she works with a trainer or knowledgeable horse person to give this horse a good start, and not any bad habits.  Good luck!

He looks like a nice dressage prospect. I'd take him if I was lookin for another horse.

    Hey there!

My mom has a Percheron/Stdbred cross who looks A LOT like this guy. He's 5 now, and she's had him for a year. Before she bought him last summer he was being trained extensively in dressage. He was doing well with it too, except his mind just wasn't there. He hated being stuck in a ring and is a really thick (big) horse to be forced into preforming some of the more advanced moves when his mind just wasn't there. He's basically the year off, just being a trail buddy with some light ring work to give him time to mature some. My mom's starting to look into doing hunters with him but we'll have to see how he does. So basically, I would imagine that this guy would do pretty well in english, depending on his personality!

LOL, I just may  have to steal him away from my cousin, then.  She's just window shopping, really... which is all I should be doing, too...

But it's so very tempting.  So many of them are very tempting!

He has such a kind face!  I say just go for itDevil  He's is priced right and very good looking.

Trail riding okay, but I don't know about an english prospect with that upright shoulder and front pasterns.  A higher set on neck can be good in dressage, but his is almost vertical.  It might not be that bad, looking at the other pictures, but he's not set up well in any of the pictures to really see him well.

Are they just starting him slowly, or is there another reason he hasn't been started at 5?  Just curious.

I have to admit, I looked at the ad because I was VERY curious to see what a Perch/STB would look like!

I agree with remmer -- trail riding he'll do just fine.  I have seen this ad before though!

As an english prospect (dressage, jumping, eventing) I would say no.  His pasterns are short and pretty upright, thanks to drafty side, which will mean he will lack the shock absorption and spring for real suspension.  He's also sickle hocked and quite thick necked up top, which will only add to the challenge of getting him round and through.
