    I now have 3 horses!!!

So i posted last night about a free horse iwas offered. Our Equine Dentist, Holly bought him for 1200 and decided she can't keep him since she's leaving for texas for more destistry classes. So after having him online forsale for 1500 she said she would GIVE him to me.

His picture on his ad in the conformation critiques folder does him NO justice.

We picked him up today and brought him home. He's about 14.1-2 hands and have a babydoll head and is muscled head to toe for a three year old that i have seen.

He's 3 years old born March of 2006, Sire is App. Dam is QH. He's reqistered App and QH. ZERO spots on him he's a plain sorrel gelding. with one white cornet and a tiny star.

I LOVE HIM... i havnt worked him yet but his personality is sooooo laid back. his spooks are almost in place most of the time it was a small quiver.

SORRY no pictures i forgot my Camera today, will take pictures on friday promise.

Farrier was out today also said he is slghtly sicklehocked... what exactly does that mean??

Without my horse, im just human. Without me, my horse is just an animal. But when you put us together we become an unstoppable team!

Sickle-hocked is when the back leg joints of an animal are set with too much angle, resulting in the hock of an animal also having too much angle. This can result in uneven hoof wear and possible joint damage.  I wouldn't worry to much as long as you have a compitent farrier and are not going to make himinto a big time show horse.  Pheo is sickle hocked.

Thanks yeah my farrier knows all i do is local shows and fair once a year along with now maybe adding ranch horse association shows :)

So nothing big at all, he didnt sound like it was to much of a problem. infact he really liked bloodlines and said conformation wasn't bad besides his slight sicklehocked in the rear.

Re: I now have 3 horses!!!

he doesnt have impressive in his lines. it was a mix up when you go to allbreedpedigree.com and type in his sires name there is two choices one is a Paint and the other is an App. the paint has impressive in him but my horses sire is the App.

so i went out to check on him today after class, he's settled in real nice, and was out grazing with half of the herd, he's got 4-5 more new battle wounds on him from them putting him in his place in ranking. I'm not to worried about him.

The BO said today when it was feeding time that he stood and watched everyone go into the barn and once everyone was in he walked right up to his feed bucket on the fence and patiently waited for his grain. (he's the only horse in his pasture without a stall, although one horse eats in an run-in outside,

he's VERY smart. if something spooks him he does almost a quiver insted of jumping and running then goes and invetigates the scary object :) He's a very big mamma's boy already.  folled me up from the pasture today without a lead.

His trot looks like its so smooth... i plan to start working on riding him next week. He is green broke i just havnt rode him yet.

He's yet to know his name but they were calling him sylvester, and i changed it to Riley so its quite the difference but i'm sure he'll learn.

Sorry guys weather and work permitting i can't make it to the barn till Saturday now. But you WILL have pictures Saturday night.

Congrats on getting a nice horse.  I have a question though.  Do you have QH papers on him?  I ask because as far as I know QH's can only have QH or TB parents.  No Appy's allowed.  Not that it's a big deal unless you planned on breeding him.  I read that about being registerd both ways and didn't know they could be.  I'd be more inclined to think he was paint and not appy if he's got QH papers.  3 years ago was about the time that AQHA and APHA both changed their "color" rules.

    Either way, congrats.

Journey, i myself do not know about any registration organizations. that to me does not matter when i look at a horse. Although its always nice :]

I'll have to wait till i get the papers from Holly as she said that he was double registered. so i'm excited to see exacty what type of papers he has.

Here is a Link to his Sire's pedigree. looks like his sire is Half?? QH half App???

Can anyone decode this for me lol. His Dam is 100% QH

Aw, he's cute! I'm so happy you decided on getting him, and I guess you have officially decided on Riley?  I like it.

That pedigree mess confuses me.  It looks like whoever owns the baby picks which breed of the parents they like the most, and somehow that horse then becomes that breed only.  One halfQh/app the owner seems to have liked QH, so that's what the baby is, another the owner likes Apps better, so Ta Da, and you have a solid App....So confusing....

He looks like a sweet boy!  But he looks like he is so relaxed he might fall asleep any minute, LOL.

Personally I would still swing for the HYPP test just incase.  You dont know much about his sire and Impressive was bred extensivly into the App bloodlines too.  Then you could now if he needs a special diet or anything.

    Re: Riley PICS ADDED

Thanks Amber, he is so relaxed. neither of my other boys have ever been relaxed like he is. He just looks a new stuff like he's already seen everything in the world and nothing is scary.

Yesterday i lunged him in the round pen, just walk trot for maybe a max of 10 minutes, he's so lazy. I also introduced my saddle. which definatly doesnt fit him. but he didnt care when i put the pad or saddle on him and tightened it. he just stood there. (he is green broke) i just wanted to make sure he wouldnt freak out. I havnt rode him yet, i still ave to figure out the last time he was rode and in what type of bit.

I might take him to a show on October 11th with CB if there is room in the trailer and i can get his coggins paper from th old owner before then.

Also about the HYPP testing. it will have to wait till taxes come back as i can't afford another vet bill right now. but i will check into it

when i showed up last night Maggie (BO's Daughter, 11 years)was setting up feed. she had been trying to shoo RIley out of Fantacy's stall- it connects with the pasture as a run in, she had been trying for 10 minutes before i showed up and had to lead him out.  He's not afraid of anything, whips being tapped on him. he just stands there like "eh i know it wont hurt me"

He sounds like a great horse.  Hopefully you can take him to the show.  I'm sure he will be lots of fun.

As for what bit I would just put a snaffle in his mouth.  That is all I ever use.

Whenever you get ready AQHA Testing Kits can be ordered for $40.  Here is the site:

Re: I now have 3 horses!!!

I longlined him yesterday as i dont just want to let him sit while i wait on his old owner getting back to me on how much she worked with him. he was great we did walk trot, stop, back, and he was GREAT :)

I put my saddle on him, but it doesnt fit so i figured we could work on our stearing from the ground as i hope to find a decent saddle to use on him. (he has no withers as opposed to my old men, who my saddles are fit for)

I have the same problem with Missy especially.  Invest in a good breastcollar so that you dont get a slipping saddle.  It can be really uncomfortable for the horse if it slips back and sits in the wrong spot.
