    Dam, beaver!

Apparently, a beaver has sent up camp in the back 7(acres) of our property which is pretty much untouched. Our creek runs back there, and meets up with a spur, in which the beaver has constructed a dam in that fork. Now, he has flooded the neighbor's wetlands adjacent to us, much to his delight, and it's upsetting the neighbors.

My question is, has anyone had to "remove" a beaver and what is the proper way to go about this? I called DNR but, that will take a while and the dam removal is our expense. We had one kind volunteer who said he would, "Take a back hoe to it" but, I really rather relocate this beaver first. Help!

WOW best of luck.. I saw them blowing them up with dynamite on tv, but I dont think thats very "animal friendly." You will doubtless have to get some wildlife extractors out there. So sorry!

Thank you for trying to relocate this beaver!  You might check with game and fish.

You can go to our website, http://www.ncwildlife.org and click on "Coexisting with Wildlife."  Then click "nuisance wildlife" and go to beaver management.  I of course, vote to let the beavers, stay, they do create a lot of wildlife habitat too.  But that document will tell you everything you ever (never?) wanted to know about beavers and management.

Thanks Solo, I was hoping for your expertise! Unfortunately, with all the rain, he or them, can't stay any longer, as the rise of the creek behind the wetland is going to wash out the road.

I am going to put on the waders and check it out this weekend...

I recently saw an article on how to put a big PVC pipe through the bottom so that the water flows but the Beaver can stay and everybody is happy.  I think it was in the Backwoods Home magazine or something.  I am going to try to find the article.

    Re: Dam, beaver!

Well, we had to destroy the dam this weekend, as much as we could by hand, and will have to have the trapper come out to relocate the beavers. In talking with some of the neighbors, I guess these guys (or parents there of) had damed up the creek last year, a bit North of where we are. Funny thing is, according to the Wisconsin DNR we are in a "low" beaver population part of the state!
