    How Often do you deworm?

Im sure it depends on the horse & time of year in some situations but I was just wondering what is "regular"

I have read that every 2 months is good but I used to being around mustangs & we would worm about 1 every 6 months & they did just fine.

Also does a pellet or liquid wormer work just as well as a paste? I use Ivermectin 1.87%

What brands do you all use?

    Any tips/suggestions are welcomed! Thanks!

I use the rotational paste dewormer packs from ValleyVet (where you buy a year at a time) and it is CHEAP.  I worm every other month.

every time they're shod, which is about every 6-8 weeks, so it makes it easier to remember.

I've been deworming every three months -- ivermectin in rotation with moxidectin, but have recently changed to a every two month, more vareity program (new barn, new vet). It is probably similar to what Solaris does.

It uses pyrantal twice a year, ivermectin or moxi in the spring, ivermecting or moxi PLUS praziq in the fall, and fenbendazole or oxibendazole thrown in there somewhere.

OK, here's a link to the chart.  Only thing is that it's made by Intervet, who makes Pancur (fenbendazole), so of course it's going to tell you to use it, when you can use oxibendazole (Anthelcide EQ) instead. AND, it recomends doing the pancur-power pack yearly in the winter. I really wouldn't use the powerpac except on the advice of a vet. Personally, I'd just give another dose of either the oxibendazole or the fenbendazole.

I've seen many deworming charts, and I like this one because it doesn't just tell you "ivermectin in March," but has you check for weather conditions -- ie, freeze, thaw, etc; giving the paste at the right time helps make the drug more effective.  Giving the dewormer a bit late because you haven't had a freeze yet isn't going to hurt anything if you're deworming six times a year.

I've also heard people have very good success with daily pyrantle plus ivermectin once in the spring and ivermectin+praziq in the fall.

I use Food Grade Diatamaceous Earth, 1/2 cup everyday.  It is a natural daily dewormer and has many other benefits also.   I got a 50 lb bag for 50 dollars because I have 14 horses.  I used to buy a 10 lb bag for 13 dollars and it lasted 4 horses a month. The 50 lb lasts me quite awhile even with as many as I have.  You have to make sure it is Food Grade.  Pool Grade has chemicals added in it that will seriously injure or kill your horse!

I do daily deworming, to get the worms before they get a chance to do damage to the intestines. The pellets are added to their LMF Super Supplement--a grain-like feed administered in 2cup amounts at dinner--and I give ivermectin twice a year in addition. I used to give them the ivermectin paste by mouth, but I discovered that I can just mix the ivermectin paste in with their SS, put in a handful of rolled oats to add more flavor, and they deworm themselves! They sniff at it when I let them in for dinner, but when I come out in the morning for breakfast everything is gone. Slick.

Just don't lift up the far corner of the stall mat. . .  and you just thought it was some shavings stuck under there Wink

Re: How Often do you deworm?

I worm my mare every 3 months - 4 times a year.  I probably use a similar schedule to Lauralite.  We just did Ivermectin.

The barn we're at is on that schedule and our previous barn did not worm their horses!!! Confused
