    Re: Reining

Hi Kelly glad to finally find you.
Hey Lucy, I got an email from Chrismatic and one from Sheri on your horse's win. Congrats in a big way you must be proud!

Does anyone know what has happened to Lettis and Granny and Char and Solano and everyone else? I hope they catch up with us.

Lucy please give the full details on what show and when and if I can look up something and see a picture of your horse!

I was wondering does anyone have a opinion on the following: My husband was cattle penning. I cattle penned for 5 or 6 years before he decided he would get a horse and pen, which he did for the last 3-4 years until last summer. I quit because I got sick of the pettyness (we didn't win because of you, even if it wasn't the truth) and all the drinking (I ended up driving my husband home) and the fact that the cost was so high (they did what is called boxing up. Finding 4 really good riders and doing combinations of 3 so they all rode as many times as possible.) Also they managed to have ringers in the group, people with lots of horsepower and dollars to match, so that they could win. It became all about winning, jerking and yanking horses and drinking. I found it nearly impossible to find partners as I was always riding a younger horse and just wanted to have fun but not at the expense of the horse or the cattle. Anyhow he got tired of not winning and me not being there to drive the drunks home and am not sure what else and quit last summer. This year he wanted to go back and I said okay, lets get some well broke horses but I still want to go for fun and I don't want the drinking stuff to happen. Well, he said unless I was going just to win noone would ride with me. Unless I really had horse power noone would ride and unless I was willing to spend a lot of money to box up noone ($150/day) would ride and he said to be a part of the group I had to get involved and not mind the drinking and the jerking and the poor sportmanship. I said well I guess I am not willing to spend $10000 for a horse (we'd need 2) and I wasn't willing to just do penning every weekend so no I guess I wasn't committed to penning. He agreed and said he wasn't going and then announced on Thursday he is penning Saturday and he's got teams. I just want to have fun with my horse and if I win it's a bonus and if I don't it's okay too. What do you think?

    Re: Reining

LUCY and JANUS so glad to see you ladies. Janus thanks sooo much for sending me this forum I'm much obliged. the folks here seem so friendly.

JANUS Have you managed to purchase any more warmbloods? Been to any sales? As for your husband.. well go out and by the better horse and show them all up. But what do you mean by BOX UP? I'm not understanding that terminiology. Too bad that they could not do like a rookie division or a just for fun division.

LUCY Congrats once again for Scarlett's big win!!!! Oh that is just so fabulous. Cannot wait to see pics of her, And the saddle you must be absolutely THRILLED. Please let us know when she is showing in OKC so I can sit on my butt and watched the webcast like I did last year when BEAU was showing for SOLANO.

Oh yes I've emailed LETTIS several times and have not heard from her. I will email GRANNY again and let her know about this site. I've been talking with SHERI almost daily. And I was talking with SOLANO today as well. She now has the site and I hope she will be joining us soon. I hear from CHAR almost every day as well, and will mention for her to join us.

CHAR'S Faith just went away for four months of training. And I believe was going to have her first rides at the trainer's this weekend.

The fireworks are going off here like crazy and my poor german shepherd is having a hissy fit.

    Re: Reining

I really enjoy reining. I was able to train with a good reining trainer for a couple of years but never competed. I think the sport of reining is only going to grow bigger and bigger! I really like seeing the equitation riders switch over and the transformation they and their horses make! The lights come on in the horses' eyes and the riders go from perfectly vertical and stiff to relaxed and going with it! I LOVE IT! Grin

    Re: Reining

Hey all... This site is neat, but kind of awkward in that you can refer to the posts easily once you start posting.

Anyway... Yes, I'm very proud of Scarlet. Her trainer said going in that he "wasn't going to push her," and that he was going to save her for the OKC futurity, so I was so surprised when she scored a 221. What was even neater (in a way) was that I heard audience folks commenting on "what a cute horse" while she was performing. I must have been beaming! As for pictures, they are taken by Primo Morales Photography at PrimoMorales.PhotoReflect.com. I don't imagine the SWRHA show will be on his site for a week or so.

Janus: As for the team-penning. I had once thought about trying it, but I'm like you... I would just want to be having fun. Winning is great, but it's not everything. Plus... I have a problem with heavy drinking and doing semi dangerous sports - or at least ones that could be dangerous if you've got drunks involved. Don't get me wrong... I like my beer, wine and an occasional Long Island Iced Tea (when I've got a designated driver), so I'm not a prude in that respect. I'd be very mad if some drunk cowboy ran into me and injured me or my horse! So... my advice would be to not go under those conditions. Wouldn't it be great if you could find an all girl, just for fun, group?

Also... speaking of injuries... did you all see the Breeder's Cup races where the horse was injured and was likely going to be euthanized? I missed the actual race but came into the room just after. It sounded so very sad. It sounded like the horse could have survived the injury, but that it ran off after the fall (or whatever) and I guess made the injury worse. So sad...

Well... I'm at work, so better get back to it! They're monitoring our web surfing...lol! At least all they'll catch me doing is horse/dog/occasional shopping...LOL! In other words... no porno!!!

    Re: Reining

When I switched from English, I had a great reining trainer work with me for a year and I really liked it. I always rode her horses. I could never afford a really good reining horse and went into Barrels.

I do like to teach my starters reining and I also work them in Dressage; they are multi-trained. :-) It gives an excellent basis for Barrels or just good horsemanners.

I do love watching it live or on TV, but that goes for any horse sport. Grin

    Re: Reining

LUCY what a fabulous score. Lets hope she scores even higher when he decides to push her.. Your trainer must be so very very pleased with her. What does Hubby think now? and after she shows in OKC what are you plans for her?

I have to agree that dressage and reining are both great foundations for any discipline.. Lightness and responsivness are always valued.

I showed barrels many many many years ago.

I thought that the horse in the breeders cup was okay too. Unless I caught highlights for a different race. I could not even figure out why he fell. Must have just stumbled on some loose footing.

Oh yes and to any Canadiens out here.. lol I'm hooked on Tim Horton's Raspberry Hot Smoothees... lol. I've tried all btu the orange.. and dear Gosh they are addictive.

    Re: Reining

I didn't see the fall. I just heard a vet talking to the newsman about it. He was speculating, from what he was hearing from the vets at the scene, that the horse's injury was so severe that he/she would have to be put down. If that turned out to not be the case, I certainly hope so. Maybe someone else on here will have heard.

Yes... I'm hoping that the 227 horse was at it's very best maximum score under perfect conditions, LOL, and that Scarlet wasn't operating at full capacity. Seriously, If they're capable of a 227 then they deserve whatever they win. Regardless... she's shown she can do respectably, she's had her picture in a major magazine (although she wasn't named), and she's been in the campion's seat, so to speak. Some people try more than once and don't get that. I'm very blessed, and I just hope she and her trainer stay healthy and safe. I've already been given some very good memories.

As for what I'll do after the futurity... I'd love to continue to show her, but I'll just have to see what the financial situation is like. It would definitely be possible if I could at least get a few months of a break from the training bills. At least until I find a second job to replace the one I had with the company that closed it's doors. Oh... to be rich...LOL!

    Re: Reining

I agree that reining is a great way to just get a horse broke and besides it gives a person something to do with the horse even if you do not compete. A purpose helps when riding. Reining training is so good with a lot of other disaplines. Not all of us feel that competing is important...hence my problem with the cattle penning. BTW boxing up is where 4 good/winning riders get together and ride each 3 times changing one rider each time because the same team cannot compete twice in the same class. It increases the chances of winning but it ties up the good riders from riding with others. But their biggest desire is to win. Nothing wrong with it but at times it is at all costs....yes Lucy they do ride drunk and have seen that with a lady here that is a local vet! They are sooo hard on their horses it makes me angry. I don't mind a drink but I do not get drunk with this crowd as they are the worst back stabbing bunch of gossips so I never do relax anyhow. I don't have much of an igo and don't know how to relate to people who do. So a lot of it is really just me.

Another subject: no I haven't found another mare. I did have one on the line but they decided not to sell her so am still looking. I want something either broke or one that has done something or produced something. I have awhile because what I want is to have at least two foals at a time. I do have the Rotspon semen for 2006 breeding but a foal is a looonnnng way away. Silly but I think they need buddies to be happy.

I was watching the races but had to leave...didn't hear a thing about the horse. I still feel bad for Raffian and that was how many years ago,20?

Lucy, Scarlett has a bunch of cheerleaders for OKC...when is it for sure that she goes? It so great that all your effort has paid off.

Kelly how is the weather in Cape Breton?

JANUS Good to see you posting agAIN. Normally we go so long without posts from you.

Http://www.warmbloods-for-sale.com is a good site to take a peek. I'll look for you and see what I stumble across.

I'm not a drinker myself.. But I've seen many people take a shot before they go into the reining pen, or to barrel race. they claim it takes the edge off..

LUCY Now I wonder what stallions would cross nice with Miss Scarlett.. lol Thinking about it yet yourself? Did you ever decide about Breeding Bridgette? How is she these days?

Dad is spending tonight in the hospital. They've been playing with his blood pressure meds since the end of Aug. anyway he has been complaing about sore lower arms, and chest pains, and shortness of breath. He went to work today and almost blacked out when he walked to the top of a small hill. and he came back home. I started on him at 8am to go to the hospital he finally went at 1. tHEY Did an X-Ray, EKG, blood work non stop.. they were doing some more when I left at 8pm. and they will be doing a stress test in the AM if he is feeling well enough. I will not be around for that because i have to take DOn M to Glace Bay for some asthma tests to see if we can get to the bottom of this cough..

    Re: Reining

Hi Kelly, I hope your dad is okay!!! I didn't know he wasn't well. He isn't overweight is he? What about exercise? How is your brother other than the cough? Have you had them check him for whooping cough? What about mold in the house?

I am trying to post more because it is getting crappy outside and have decided the problem with the ranch in Montana isn't going away soon so have been missing meetings. Also don't want to lose touch with you all.

I am seriously thinking I should be buying a good working horse and trying penning again. I do have the loud Paint gelding being ridden on the ranch by the nephew. He is really big and slow as his mother was WP champion in Ontario and he has her slowness so I don't think he can be a penner but I will see and then decide. We are supposed to get in cattle in the mountains south of Calgary this weekend then haul him home.

Some of those penners don't just take a drink they get really loaded. All they get to ride is a minute and then stand around a lot. So they drink more time then ride. If you sign up for 3 runs then you have 3 seperate 1 minute runs and if you are in the half back you get to ride some more. If not you go home or wait for the next class. They are all assigned ratings numbers like the ropers and can ride in various classes. The vet and her guy get so loaded and run around like a bunch of idoits on their horses. One day I was afraid to warm up my horse because they might run me down...their horses are nice animals and have an absolute look of fear in their eyes. It is hard to watch.

I will take a look at the site. I find people selling on the web put their prices way up there in the Alice in Wonderland range and I am not in that bracket.

    Re: Reining

JANUS Dad is in great shape for a man of 52. LOL He barely has any extra stomach.. His legs are extremely muscled.. and he works out almost daily. as well as walks for at least an hour a day.

They have been playing with his blood pressure meds since the end of Aug. and he has had been complaing about his arms being sore, so the switched something. Anyway he has been complaining about shortness of breath as well which the puffer was taking care of. But today it was a little too much so he is in the hospital overnight.

Don M is pretty much as healthy as can be except for the cough. He was already diagnosed with WHOOPING Cough. and allthe docs seem to agree that if it was whooping cough it would be gone by now.. We are going on 11 months with it. So he is getting a different asthma test tomorrow morning. All his X-days show clear. Including the last one from three weeks back. They put him on some stuff for post nasal drip to see if that would take care of the cough, but it isn't. They also have scheduled an Upper GI Series.

Try the Western Pleasure gelding penning. Hey the experience would be good for him. and no one ever thought that Classy had an ounce of speed in her.. lol. I took her out to a wide open field. and pushed her for it.. Then after that I had it whenever I wanted it. In the ring or out. So maybe he just needs some motivation to move faster.

Pity about the vet. I also know folk who take adavan before they show..Really showing is not that big of a deal at least not around here, that you need to take that stuff.. But they do.

    Re: Reining

I asked about the whooping cough because even after the disease has made its run they cough and cough for 3 to 4 months but 11 is too long I think. My kids had it 16 years ago. I kept taking them to the Dr. and even had him make notes on my file about me being a nut case when I suggested it but finally taped the cough and played it over the phone to my former family Dr and he diagnosed whooping cough and told me to get erthromyicin. I even went to the health unit when this was happening and they denied any whooping cough anywhere and classed me as a nut until 6 months later they found they had a mini epedemic on the Indian reserve near us. So don't take anyone's word...push and push and someone will finally figure it out. My husband is on blood pressure meds and finds his running helps and really what would help the most is if he would stop drinking so much beer!

I will likely try Trooper penning but he is so big I don't think he has much tunaround. His grandmother was a jumper and hunter. As with Paints his father was just a nicely colored horse. So will see. He looks like Haldago so he should sell if that is what I decide to do.

I looked at the sale site. All the ones I was interested in are sold. Lots of pricey ones there that are nice but not what I need. I guess I will have to keep checking.
