    Yearling feeding advice??

Last week I got a year old arab colt who has been strictly on pasture for the last few months. He has a fat grass belly, we wormed him right away, anyhow. Right now I have him strictly on 2 flakes orchard grass am and 2 flakes pm.. no grain or supplements... Do you have any suggestions on what I should be feeding him? Thanks

    Lyndsey

Congratulations on your new baby Grin if it helps, my vet was out the other day to see my baby (close in age to yours)pasture is the best for him-if your pasture is good-I do feed my little guys some hay in the morning but the 3 of them split 2 flakes and then I turn them out for the day-they get hay at night too 1 flake each-do you have a pasture? if you do is the grass plentiful? You were very right to worm him-according to Doc the big round tummy is a sighn of worms-did you happen to look for any worms after you wormed him? If you saw any then you might need to consult your vet-I did see them-my vet wants us to do worming every 30 days for a couple months. Seems the worms really take to the babies more than the bigger guys-you might start seeing a difference in his tummy soon if the belly is worms-ours had the tummy thing too and it didn't take a few days after the worming and we could see a diff. Also-have you tried mixed hay? Mine love it and it seems to satisfy them better than the orchard-hope it helps-good luck-KIT Smile

What grain dealers are in your area? Purina, Nutrena, Buckeye, Progressive, etc?

I feed my yearlings good quality grass or hay 24/7, whole oats, and free choice salt and mineral. Works great for me.

    Quality doesn't cost it pays.

New to the baby feeding thing myself. I have an almost 6 month weanling--man, time goes fast!--that seems to be doing very well with what I'm doing. With vet advice, I've got her on oats (western crushed, I think), Stamina, and 1/4 cup Flax seed. She gets all this twice daily except the flax which she gets once daily. She's on pasture 24/7--better stuff by day and not so great stuff by the barn with my mare who can't have really good pasture due to being far too fat, by night. She's also getting wormed once a month til winter. The first month, she was in a stall at night and she got a couple flakes of hay which she didn't really eat (she was only in for about 8 hours a night and guess she just slept after eating her dinner!) so I quit giving her any. She also has access to blue salt blocks. She's filled out nicely (pretty darn skinny when I got her) and her coat seems to be doing better to. She's got tons more energy than she did when I bought her.

Not meaning to hijack! But, I have a 5 1/2mo. old filly, she has been wormed twice, (on 8 week cycle) like the big guys. Should I be worming her every month? I bought daily wormer to start them all on, would that work for her?

I wormed my filly a couple times when I got her--she did test positive for strongyles though. When the vet came out, he recc'd doing her once monthly til the dead of winter as youngsters aren't as "immune" to parasites as the older horses are. Didn't ask him if that would apply to her as a yearling as well . . .I only worm my mare maybe 3-4 times a year. Depends how paranoid I'm feeling! Yah know, did I get all those bots?? Was it cold enough?? Lol!

Well IMO thinner is better than overweight for a yearling and they all kinda have that hay belly thing or atleast that's what my vet says... it's prob not worms espically if you wormed him. I had soooooo many people say that but my vet says they all kinda look like that some more than others.
What your feeding sounds right to me you just would need to add some vtms but not sweet feed just vtms and easy to digest stuff like maybe some rolled oats.
