Alfalfa/Orchard/Clover and Bahia (sp)..... The horses love it and in the winter the alfalfa seems to help the two that tend to colic easier.

Rest In Peace my little man.

Recently we picked up a few bales of just Alfalfa @ $3.50. But we usually get Alfalfa/Grass hay @ $2.75. Sadie gets 4 flakes a day, depending on thickness of bale.

I feed Coastal and last time I stocked up it was $8.75/bale. I'm going to call around this week so I can order some more for the winter so we'll see if that's gone up!

I've just always fed it & have never fed alfalfa.

I use ~ 3/4 bale a day for my 2 horses (one is 16 & the other is a yearling).

Seems most ppl in Az use alfalfa. My big horses get that, as the alternative won't keep weight on my TBs well, and they've all been raised on it from before I got them, so I just continued (and they do great on it).

The minis get bermuda, as alfalfa shouldn't be given to minis (and not the best for the big horses, I know, but...).

It's about $10.50 a bale alfalfa, and 11.50 bermuda. There is also mixed alfalfa and bermuda for the cost of bermuda. And at some places I've found (but never bought) timothy hay, at $20.00 a bale (MAJOR YIKES!)

Prairie Hay. I am in Kansas. Wink Prairie hay would be the native grass. Here it is usually bluestem's. Runs $2.00 or so a bale if I recall. My recollector takes a vacation now and then tho. lol Depends on if you buy out of the field or after it's put up in a barn. When harvested or later on, a few bales at a time or a winters worth at once.. Pricing is contingent on many things.

I use a mix of grass/timothy hay primarily because that's what's available in my neck of the woods. I pay $3.00/bale unloaded & stacked in my barn.

We feed all of ours Coastal Round Bales. We produce it ourselves, but the average cost around here is $80-$125 a bale. We feed squares to the pony and those were I think $6 in the field(Coastal) She gets two flakes AM and PM.

The rounds feed two horses a piece and will usually last a month.

We bought two BIG squares of alfafla for my stud while he was home from the trainers for 2 months, they were $125 a piece. Alfalfa is becoming VERY hard to find down here.Thank goodness we don't feed it.

I feed bermuda, primarily. I buy it off the field, but this year it's been scarce. The spring was too cool for the bermuda to get started, then it went straight to drought. I just got 75 bales, off the ground at 3.25 per bale. That's the most I've ever had to pay. It's usually about 2.75.

Our new horse used to get alfalfa. I've converted him to bermuda. Bermuda is much finer, and I had to slowly mix in the bermuda so he wouldn't choke on the finer hay. But, alfalfa doesn't grow here (or if it does it gets blister beetles!) But when I first brought him home, I fed him alfalfa at 10.00 a bale. After a while, I started adding bermuda to the mix.

The other hay that's available around here is fescue. It's usually baled in big round bales and fed to cattle. Not many folks square bale around here. The fescue would be cheaper, but I haven't found a good source for it. (At least for horse quality hay.)

Timothy/grass mix here. Usually available and the goats and sheep like it too. I just paid $6 per bale. I got it as low as $4.80 a few months ago because the guy was trying to get rid of what he had left on his truck. Early spring the suppliers were all out and the feed store was selling it for $8.50.

I feed aletia/bahaia mix. Its from my cousin and is fertalized good and very fine. My horses love it. It cost me 3.50 a bale loded on a trailer. Unloded by self and boyfriend. We will be getting another lode of the same and probibly some costal which is out in the field now to convert over to so no chance of colic from one to the other and then back in the spring.
