    New arrival

The new gelding is here. It was a long day. 300 miles round trip to retrieve him and got started at 5:30 AM. For those not aware, he's a 10 YO dark bay Arab cross now named Reno. He's just a tad on the long side of 14.3 hh, same size and general build as Jewel, who he's replacing as my saddle horse since her shoulder injury. Hopefully, her saddles will fit him. He's not accused of having any special talents or vices. The previous owner's kids rode him almost daily and were riding him the day I went to see him. But I was mostly drawn to him because his calm eye and demeanor closely resembled that of little Missy, my client Arab mare from last year.

Right now he's confused and uncertain of his new surroundings. And Big Al absolutely hates him already! It took Al a few minutes to figure out Missy had NOT come back and this was another gelding. GAME ON! Normally shy, nervous and retreating Al spent several hours charging the fence with ears pinned and teeth bared trying to rip the hide off Reno. But the new gelding has calmly stayed just out of reach with no attempts at defending himself... so far. Jewel, on the other hand, just stands at the fence with a "Awe, jeez.... another one?" expression. And even though she has shown little interest in Reno, he will move off his hay next to the fence anytime she approaches but will calmly remain eating when Al is snapping at him.

Reno was kept with two other geldings for 2 years at his last home. He appears a bit wormy to me, his stools are dry as dust from poor quality hay and his teeth need floating. And his feet have had terrible trims. Long toes and heels with over-reaching from the back. My farrier will be here Wednesday or Thursday to start correcting that. He also needs away-from-pressure lessons and is still unsure of me. He doesn't care for peppermints but caught on to oatmeal cookies immediately. Grooming and fly spray are not issues. I haven't tried the clippers yet. I won't be loading up his plate too much for another 24 hours but I do expect to take him on a Poker Ride Sunday.

I took some photos of him this afternoon and promptly deleted them by accident while trying to save them to a file. I'll try again tomorrow after a good night's sleep and post them in the ES gallery. ~FH

I like the name, FH. He sounds like a great addition and I'm sure everyone (Al) will accept him eventually.  Looking forward to seeing the pics.

    Re: New arrival

YesBig SmileSmileYes YEAH!!!!! Reno has arrived. Love the name BTW. Poor fella needs to settle in and get used to his surrounding for a bit it seems.  And look at Al playing all big and tough to the new guy in town. LOL I was gonna yell at you about pics but then I saw that you were apparently a bit worn out from the trip yourself and the brain-fingers didn't respond to your intentions on saving the pics. So I will lay off for a short time but will be expecting new pics in the very near future. Wink I can't wait to hear how the poker ride goes for ya on Sunday.

I had a good weekend. We went to a raffle on Saturday and I won $50, DH won a case of Mt Dew!!! We had a great time. Sunday I spent the day working at the barn. Got to ride a couple of horses and lunged the wild child, Toby, the resident pony. He is by far my favorite at the barn. He is a typical pony with LOTS of Ponytude. And why I love him so much. LOL.  Brings back alot of childhood memories. I totally want to hop on him and take him for ride.  Then I came home and took Glis out for a nice ride. The old, unplowed corn field was in perfect footing form. Unfortunetly it is short lived as heavy rain and thunderstorms are rolling through. 60 today with rain all day and 40 tomorrow. God, please make this crappy weather go away!!!!

    Re: New arrival

Exciting news, FH! I must have missed the discussion on Reno.  He sounds like a real gentleman and maybe Al will learn some manners from him.  I hope he overcomes his dislike of the new boy.  If anyone can sort them out, you can.  And hopefully Jewel will appreciate a gelding who knows his place.

Sounds like you have a great weekend, Sp.  I did too, with a lesson and a wedding.  Now back in Flagstaff assessing all the work I have to do!  Anyway, forget that, I am going out to lunch with a girl friend and my dd!  Catch you guys later!

FH he is sure is a cutie. Under your care he'll be putting the proper weight on in a hurry. A little TLC goes a long way. He's gonna be alot of fun for ya. Are you gonna ride him in the Poker Run the whole way or just take him there so he can get a feel for it? And thought I'd do you a favor and just paste your pics here for ya so people don't have to go look for them. Wink Well I tried but just got a big red X, so here are the links instead. Tongue Tied

    First ride on Reno

Now I know why they had a Tom Thumb bit on him. He doesn't know how to drop off the bit or back up. I started those lessons today with a O-ring snaffle but he's gonna get some more time off until the dentist gets here. Lots of points, long canines and he STILL has his wolf teeth. My guess is his previous riders didn't press the backing up issue because the request gets head tossing started with the bit running into so much ivory. And dropping off the bit gets into those 1 inch canines. I may ride him on the Stop & Turn a little bit until his mouth gets squared away.

Jewel's 6" Big Horn fits him MUCH better than the 5 1/2" gullet they had on him. But he's high withered and my lardbutt compresses the saddle too close to those withers to suit me. I have a cheapy 6" work saddle with a little more gullet elevation I'll try on the next ride. An extra blanket would probably do the trick but I don't like giving up that much contact with the horse. I only spent about 15 minutes on him. It's in the low 90's here already and the humidity is at summertime levels. I went through three shirts today.

Reno and AL were actually PLAYING with each other this morning. But if Jewel is close by AL starts taking things more seriously and gets snaky. During the play session Al took off for the barn, leaving Reno at the South gate. And like a bolt of lightning Reno suddenly wheeled and burst into what I can only describe as a full Pony Express gallop. He went from zero to "holy crap!" in 2 seconds, fully extended and gobbling up real estate like in the old TV westerns where they speed up the camera to make the horses look fast. No trick photography needed. Reno IS fast. VERY fast! It looks like he's enjoying his properly trimmed feet.

I like my new pony. ~FH

    Re: First ride on Reno

Yes Yes Yes Yes Awesome FH!!!

I've been busy today too.  Rode Journey we went 3 miles, gave him a good scrubby bath.  Then cleaned his sheath. Boy was that nasty.  lol now the neighbors really think I'm wierd to as I did it right out on the little concrete pad in the driveway where I bathed him. In full view of everyone..  Then I trimmed his feet.  Then it was on to Brat.   Same thing.. well mostly. lol  Lunged, rode for a short while. She was getting nervous.  It's been prolly 6 months since she was rode last.  Got her back and bathed her.

Where I get to ride.  The river is way up right now.
